DC Comics: Rebirth

It's been 4 years since I gave up on monthlies (now bi-weeklies?). I do remember when I collected and the decisions when I'd add a new title, realizing it might mean cutting another title.

I stopped collecting due to money issues and, while I am better off now, I still can't budget what I used to for comics. However, what I've seen of the Rebirth titles is interesting.

Does anyone know if DC is going to do what they did with New52 and release a TPB of the first issues? As Guy pointed out, it's cheaper and that was an interesting way to get people to sample different titles.

I wish that DC would go the Marvel Unlimited route--I'd pay 100 USD a year. Heck--you could subscribe to Marvel and DC and Comixology (mostly all of the other companies) for about the same price as buying 2 to 3 titles a week.

While that may be a good idea for some, I still like owning comics. I bought the Valiant Humble Bundle in 2014 and their Groupees in 2015 and I still have unread comics. It's not because they're not good (they are damned awesome), it's that it's annoying to read. I hate to sound old-fashioned, but I don't have to worry about a physical comic's battery life!

But, again, that's just me. I am in favor of ways to make getting comics easier!

There is going to be a Rebirth hardcover of all the specials. I think that's out in November.

Thanks! I'm not sure I'll get it, but it's a possibility.

Comixology did just start a subscription service that gives you free access to certain comics for a $5.99US a month. Sadly it's pretty limited right now, and based of off the stuff on my wishlist doesn't appear to include Marvel or DC. It just started in the last few months, so I'm hoping they might add more publishers in future.

That's fine. I love physical comics but I don't live anywhere I can buy them. Offering a subscription service (usually at a 6 month or more delay) doesn't in any way prevent you from reading the actual comics. Besides, you're supporting a local small business so that's great!

Marvel has its own Unlimited service. I'm hoping DC does something similar soon. But that's what I'm saying. Marvel is a hundred dollars a year. If DC had a similar price that would be less than three hundred a year with comixology's to have access to all the libraries. It is very much the same idea as subscribing to Spotify or Apple Music.

As for Hitch's JLA, I recently read that the finally issues of that series will be published this summer. That said, how are we going to get a second bi-weekly Justice League series when it is so difficult to put out monthly ones. Darkseid war was delayed, Forever Evil was delayed. This bi-weekly concept is by far the stupidest thing I've seen in a long time and I hope it doesn't last very long.

I believe most if not all of the bi-weekly books have two separate art teams to keep the books on track.

That being said, I'm not sure how long I can keep the pace with too many bi-weeklies.

It's bordering on stupidity to do characters like Cyborg and Deathstroke as bi-weeklies, that's for sure. I mean, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, Nightwing and the Flash are already wonky, but at least those are characters with relatively big fanbases and could survive two books per month, but Deathstroke?!

much like the beginning of New 52, i imagine they're throwing stuff against the wall and waiting to see what sticks. i too doubt Aquaman, Cyborg and Deathstroke can sustain bi-weekly (and i say that as a fan of Aquaman too).

Yeah, I'm just buying the bi-weeklies for Action, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow and Justice League (and, eventually, JLA). I'd probably buy Flash and Aquaman, too, if they were monthlies, but so I'm gonna wait for the trades (and seeking those for a reasonable price).

For the record, I already ordered subscriptions at my comic shop for the monthlies "New Super-Man" (albeit on a try-out), Superwoman, Supergirl, Super-Sons and Titans.

Definately Green Lantern for me, probably Action/Superman, considering Detective/Batman (bought the first couple of issues but haven't decided yet). I'd like to add Titans & Batman Beyond (when that returns) but I'm not sure my wallet can stretch that far.

Thus far I'm interested in Action, Superman, Batman, Detective. Not impressed with Justice League so far.

Justice League hasn't started yet. We've just had a couple of fill-ins to fill out the 52 issues of the New 52 version.

I''m definitely in for Superman and Action Comics. Batman and Detective seem like keepers for now as well. On board for Aquaman as well.

Flash is already on the bubble. Neither the art nor the writing are great. Plus "my" Flash will be appearing over in the monthly Titans, which I will be getting.

Wonder Woman is still TBD. there hasn't been enough in the book to make a call on it either way.

Green Arrow is already dropped. I thought the Rebirth issue was pretty bad. Not because Black Canary was a singer, but because I didn't dig the writing.

We'll see about the rest of the books as they come out.

Agreed. Also a very solid Aquaman fan and I'm taking a sabbatical on DC books for the time being.
I think a fair comparison would be that the Aquaman fandom was not able to keep Aquaman&the Others afloat. I know it wasn't a perfect book but it was decent with some plot lines being laid for future arcs. If the fandom couldn't keep both Aquaman and A&tO both afloat it seems inevitable then that sales on a bi-monthly Aquaman book are going to sink faster than desired and show a false sense of falling support for the character.

I was having the same thought about Aquaman, Cyborg and Deathstroke. I was under the impression that all of three of them were characters who had struggled to sustain monthly books in the past, so it seems like a big gamble to assume they can sustain bi-weeklies. I have to question if any DC characters other Superman and Batman could support bi-weeklies on a long term basis.

i haven't decided exactly what titles i'll be following. Action, Detective and Wonder Woman for sure. everything else is a maybe. right now i'm trying everything. i usually give new titles six issues to decide if i like em or not.

i wish i knew more about the Teen Titans. i only ever read the first twenty or so issues of the New Teen Titans and the first two trades of the Johns run.
