DC Comics: Rebirth

Not really Rebirth-related, but I thought this was the best thread to put this in.

I hope there'll also be an animated short by Bruce Timm, like there were for Superman and Batman.
That's pretty cool. I would love to see a short for her too. It's a shame that she's never gotten her own animated series.

That reminds me, Justice League #51. It was alright. Wish they had a more A list artist for such a top tier book though.
I enjoyed JL #51 quite a bit, and I thought the art was great. I've always liked Paul Pelletier's art, and I thought the inks by Sandra Hope really took it to the next level. I'm also glad I decided to pick up Titans rebirth since the story continues there. I haven't read it yet though.

Titans Rebirth. There's not really a lot of story here, just a lot of character work. And it's enjoyable character work, especially for someone, like me, who read Titans in the 80s and 90s. It felt good to see Dick, Donna, Wally, and Roy together again. It was like my friends were back.

But I also think that's the issue's core problem -- the emotional moments of the issue come from the experience of knowing these characters and growing up with these characters. I can't imagine a new reader would enjoy this as much as I did.

I didn't read Titans Hunt, so I may have to pick up the trade paperback of that in a few months. I'm not clear if Roy's presence here makes sense following on from Red Hood and the Outlaws and Red Hood/Arsenal.

Also, the loss of ten years makes me hope that Terry Long has been wiped from history. :)

Superman #1. I liked this in a lot of ways that I didn't like last week's Action Comics. I didn't like the way Jurgens wrote Superman there, automatically assuming that Luthor was up to no good and provoking a fight with him. I liked the quieter character work Tomasi and Gleason create here, showing us parents who are worried about their son, and the son who has powers that he doesn't understand or know how to control.

As convoluted as DC has made Superman's story now, I like this new status quo and I'd like it if it stuck around.

They're damn close to Wonder Woman 700, if you include Superman and Wonder as well as regular Wonder Woman, that were/are both happening during New 52.

Wonder Woman and Superman, as well as Superman and Batman, should probably both be cancelled, since it's a different guy, right?

I thought they were.

Thanks for that link--it has been very confusing figuring out what is happening. I imagine that most of those bi-weeklies will become monthlies before too long. In the meantime, I need to figure out what I'm cutting out of my pull list to make room for any bi-monthlies I want to purchase.

I haven't googled "cancelled books" in a while because it's too depressing.

Logically what I had calculated should be the truth, but I allow for the possibility that logic can "suck it".

Legends of Tomorrow is cancelled?! Solicitations for August still see #6 of that title released that month, with no mention of it being the final issue. I also think, before they'd cancel the book completely, they'd try to save it with replacing one or two of the series within with a slightly higher-profile character like Martian Manhunter or Captain Atom.

Endless bi monthlies is a trick to make you switch to digital (or bankrupt you.).

I am amazed that a digital comic and a physical comic is the same price/cost to the consumer.

A-####ing-mazed.

Although if you wait 6 months behind the curve (I'm told. I know very little about this, and welcome corrections with true facts.), DC cover prices gets reduced by a dollar or 2, meanwhile "eventually" Marvel's new books join their massive Unlimited subascribable library catalogue, which translate to free sorta ($60.00 annually).

DC does not have a subscription library like Marvel, as of today minus a few weeks.

http://community.comicbookresources...ffer-a-Marvel-Unlimited-Type-of-Service/page2

Although it's interesting that comixology is offering an unlimited subscription service that DC is not opting into. What the hell are they up to?

DC's (possible) long range plans.

1. They are working to their own library database with an unlimited subscription like Marvel Has, to create a digital market share.

2. They believe that Marvel is making so much money digitally, that Marvel will try to retreat from the physical market almost entirely, forcing the Nerds who still buy comics like cavemen to cross the isle to DC.

3. They don't have a plan. Long range or otherwise. DC is allowed to lose as much money as it possibly can, so long as they keep being responsible for billion dollar movies. They're just printing comics every month to keep valuable copyrights intact.

4. DC is not allowed to create a new subsubsubdivision at Warner Brothers which would require the hiring of Vice President in charge of ?????. Did Marvel already have it's unlimited data base up and running when they sold out to Disney?

The service has thousands of issues in its archive and launched on November 13, 2007.[1][2]

Disney bought Marvel in 2009.

They're both tiny cogs in massive machines.

Some to most of the characters in this book should be or might be in the TV show of the same name, or there's no bloody point to calling the book Legends of Tomorrow.

It's weird how unrelated and unlike this comic is to the TV show. :(

This is smart.

If we nerds are only buying half their books with any verve, those are the only books that they should be selling.

But if DC only sells half as many titles every month, that means that they are only going to make half as much money. So instead of inventing 26 new shitty titles that are probably unreadable crap about fictional assholes awe don't care about, or have no interest in becoming introduced to... They double the production of their guaranteed sellers, so that they are still moving the same number of units per year.

Imagine if Jennifer Lawrence had been keeping it a secret that she's a triplet, and suddenly the other two started making movies too.

Of course writers and artists still find it difficult to "make" 12 books a year, so even though there's a lot of bi monthly titles now, in all likely hood there's two creative teams on each book being now produced bi monthly, which waters down brand consistency.

Like how when Amazing Spider-Man went weekly a decade ago. No one of the other Spider-Man books had been fired when their titles were cancelled. Everyone, 6 writers and 10 artists moved in together at Amazing.

Either this is the beginning of something large and impressive, or this is the end of something halfassed.

I'm going to go with the latter. Most people's income won't have magically doubled when DC introduced their twice-monthly comics, so logically this means a lot of people will need to make some cuts. DC is effectively forcing people to stop following some titles that they would otherwise have purchased had they all stayed monthly.

You know, a few decades ago, it wasn't uncommon for some titles to be bi-monthlies, with some titles shipping the odd month and others the even months. Of course, back then the titles weren't as serialized, telling pretty much one-off stories.

I agree. A few people on here have already said they won't be buying the bimonthlies.

I don't know if I will stop with the monthlies but I limit myself to 3 to 4 titles a week, I always have. I did this when I was a teen and when I briefly returned to comics around the time of the Reign of the Supermen and when I returned again around the time of Infinite Crisis. I usually buy an Indie or two, or a Marvel comic in addition to the majority being DC. Now I buy DC two months after they are released to get that dollar off.

For DC, right now I am buying:

Justice League
Justice League of America
Detective
Action
Superman
Batman
Green Lantern
and Lois and Clark

(I stopped buying Constantine, Earth 2, Teen Titans late last year)

From the new 52 I still miss the less popular titles I enjoyed like Demon Knights, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, LSH --yes, I liked it--, Justice League Dark, and Frankenstein).

I also buy Invincible, The Walking Dead, and minis from Image or other companies when they catch my fancy. No Marvel right now.

So, when I hit the Rebirth I need to make a choice to focus on a few of the titles I've always bought with the iconic characters or buy lesser selling titles. I think all this move is going to do is reinforce the core DC comics and leave some of the more interesting titles out in the cold awaiting cancellation.
