DC Comics: Rebirth

Yeah, that whole thing fell flat for me. THIS is what kills Batman? Also, I thought he got too emotional over it. He's faced death a hundred times before and was way more stoic about it.

This seems like the best place to post this since it's DC related. Just for the hell of it I checked out the first couple DC Superhero Girls shorts, just because I love the characters, and it was actually pretty fun. I'll probably keep watching them. I would pretty confidently recommend it to any open minded adults, and definitely would for young girls who are in the target audience.
EDIT: They have released the Rebirth design images for Black Canary, Huntress, Deathstroke, Red Hood, Superwoman, Simon Baz, and Wonder Woman.

I watched a 30 minute Superhero Girls animated special on cable. So it's not a regular series right? That was just a one-off, and then there's also a series of five minute online shorts?

Batman: Dark Knight Returns: Last Crusade was very good. It actually felt like it was a part of the original DKR; the writing was very subdued and rational like the original, not crazy and insane the way the sequels have been. Great JRJR art too.

No it's not a regular series, but there is a DVD/digital movie coming out in August,
DC Superhero Girls: Hero of the Month

Best thing for me is replacing New 52 emopunk Superman with Post Crisis family man Superman.

Definately one of the highlights of Rebirth for me so far too. Also liking the shift in focus of (one of) the GL titles from the familiar Hal/Guy/John trio (even Kyle can seem a little stale now) to "rookie" Lanterns Simon and Jessica and particularly the exploration of their characters (loving how much they're weaving the "you can overcome great fear" and it not being a one-shot deal - also a favourite of mine from Kyle's solo era - into Jessica's PoV).

Was Simon Baz appearing in a book prior to this? I realized I hadn't seen him in a book in years, but then I remembered I stopped reading Green lAntern titles..

I liked it a lot, too. It's a better "Death of Jason" story than "A Death in the Family."

I think why this works in ways that DKSA and TMR don't is that this feels like a Batman story. The sequels are more DCU ensemble pieces that happen to have a late middle age Batman in them.

This is too small universe, but after TLC I wonder if Carrie is Bruce and Selina's daughter, given up for adoption.

J. Michael Straczynski certainly wrote him that way, but I don't think anyone else did. (I love JMS, but I hated his Superman run)

My Superman is the one of the 90s with Death and Return of Superman, or of Geoff Johns. The one of the 1996 animated series. Or if you want to go "alt", Grant Morrison's All Star Superman. Superman is an eternal optimist and the moral leader of the DCU. He's the one who will tell you that everything is going to be alright. He isn't hated and feared by the public. They throw him parades.

I don't get the "emo" complaint for new 52 Superman. He was never written like that in the past five years. In fact, his personality aside from five years ago flashbacks when he was young and inexperienced were very much of the traditional Superman. Also, he's killed just as the writers have put in place the beginnings of a romantic relationship with Lois.

The problem with the "old" man returning is that he doesn't have any relationships with the supporting cast. He's not friends with Jimmy, Lana, Lois, or even John Irons. Hi fortress of solitude is not his--the phantom zone villains are not his. He has no history on this earth. I still suspect that at some point the new 52 (in some form) and the old Superman are going to merge.

You've got my "thumbs up" on the above. Bold mine for emphasis.

I just read the first new Green Arrow issue. It was ok. Black Canary being a singer is still idotic, but I don't think its the fault of the GA writer. It wasn't a very good jumping on point, either. So, Oliver has a half sister? That really should have been introduced better. Also, she's

The daughter of someone who is supposed to be Oliver's age, but that would mean she had Oliver's sister with Oliver's dad when she was, what, 10? So, I guess Shado is a lot older now, and not connected to Oliver. The whole thing was kind of stupid honestly, and the Bad Guys seem like a lame rip off of the already very lame Court of Owls.

Still, there is enough good for me to keep reading, but this first issue wasn't as impressive as the GA Rebirth issue.

Emiko been in the series for quite a while now. ( since 2013). She appears. Ollie identifies as her brother. We get some background on her past. Sounds like a good intro to me.
Canary's powers are sound based. Being a singer seems right to me. So it's "idiotic", why?
How old do you think Emiko is? IIRC she's not even in her teens yet. Shado could be thirtyish and had Emiko while in her late teens or early twenties.

I'm a fan of the pre-reboot Black Canary. A second generation hero who is a great martial artist and is just generally a good character. She's definitely not a singer. It would make as much sense to make Batman a rapper. Even for the New 52 "Black Canary", the singer thing is stupid and random. She was a government agent who became a vigilante. Then, she randomly decided to become a singer. It was an idiotic, random idea from a bad writer. Its just another example of stupid changes DC makes to characters that make no sense. She's not even Black Canary anymore, she's a crappy version of Dazzler with a very bland version of pre-reboot Green Arrow's personality and minus the old Black Canary's fighting abilities or anything else related to the old BC outside of the same name and a look vaguely based on the real Black Canary. She's not as screwed over as Starfire or Power Girl or even Batgirl were, but its pretty bad. As someone who became a BC fan because of the old Birds of Prey book (the real one, not the New 52 garbage), this version of "Black Canary" is pathetic.

As for Emiko, I assumed that she was around 14-16. There is no way she's much younger then that. Also, it doesn't matter how long she's been around. Rebirth is trying to get people who ignored or hated parts or all of the New 52 back as readers. I haven't read any of that terrible New 52 Green Arrow since issue #3 I think, and that was in 2011. So, yeah, Emi is a completely out of nowhere character who gets nalmost backstory in a supposed jumping on point.

I think I've read all the Rebirth titles so far, after a several decades lay-off from DC comics.

I'm liking Superman and the Lantern stuff, Flash is O.K., but the rest isn't doing much for me. I thought Green Arrow was the worst of the bunch until I read Batman...

Sill not seeing why she couldn't become a singer. Does being a martial artist or spy somehow make that impossible? It was a slight detour in her life and connected to her quest to find out more about her past (specifically her mother). So not random Batman would become a rapper if needed to solve a case. He's a master of disguise and loves going undercover. MC Matches in the house.

Dazzler is already a crappy version of Dazzler, there's no room in that box. Dinah's more in the Lila Cheney range, anyway. It's amazing how limited your scope is. Black Canary sing. Dazzler sings. Therefore Black Canary is like Dazzler. Very small boxes in that head of your's.

Since when is this version of Black Canary not a master martial artist?

How is PG screwed over? She a Kryptonian and Superman's cousin. Would you like her to be an Atlantean again?

Why is she not much younger than that? You an expert on young girls now?

Well, it looks like Emiko isn't part of that plan, since she's in the new GA book. Your reactions aren't going to be everyone's. Some readers are continuing from the old series. Others might be new to the character. If you were expecting the previous series to be ignored, you're going to be disappointed. Not sure what you wanted. A new reader finds out Emiko is Oliver's sister. Her mother was a ninja assassin. She's a fan of Black Canary. Those of us who know the character aren't bombarded with tedious exposition. What else is needed?

Here's a challenge for you: Write a post without using mostly empty words like: garbage, stupid, idiotic or real. You know, the hyperbolic BS that renders your opinions moot.

ETA: You do realize that "Canary" is 30s/40s slang for a female singer and that's where the name comes from.

I really like Dazzler. As for Black canary, she isn't a singer. Being a singer doesn't fit any version of Black Canary, from golden age to 2011. Like I said, making her a singer makes as much sense as making Batman a rapper, or Soloman Grundy an evil break dancing zombie. They could technically do it, but it doesn't make sense for the character.

Since she's never claimed to be one or shown to be one in any comic I've seen with her? Sure, she has the generic combat skills of every powerless vigilante, but pre-reboot she was able to match Lady Shiva, who was basically the best martial artist in the world. Now, the character is all about singing, and before that she was all about her dead husband, and before that she was just filler on that terrible New 52 Birds of Prey team.

How is PG screwed over? She a Kryptonian and Superman's cousin. Would you like her to be an Atlantean again?

No. PG got screwed over because all of her early New 52 appearances gave her really one personality: She liked to party and had lots of sex. She really got nothing more until maybe 4-5 issues into World's Finest. She eventually got a bit of personality in the Earth 2, but its very bland. Nothing like the pre-reboot version. Not as bad as Sex-goldfish Starfire, but still another horrible change to a female hero by DC's New 52.
