DC Comics - Ongoing Discussion - SPOILERS

"in his story, the two Supermen will co-exist" suggests to me that the two Supermen will co-exist in the new comic :ouch:

The next paragraph:
<<”That being said," Jurgens continued," they find themselves thrown headlong into a story where Doomsday has been released in Metropolis, and as this Superman goes to fight him, Clark Kent is there with no explanation whatsoever. The mystery is going to be, 'How could this possible be happening?' Right from the get-go, we’ve got two very different characters. We have Superman, and we have Clark Kent, and no one can understand how that’s possible.”>>

You're right, now that I read it again, it appears that the "mysterious Clark Kent" from the solicitations synopsis is, in fact, the New 52-Superman. But he doesn't fight alongside the Pre-Flashpoint Superman against Doomsday, so maybe he lost his powers. We'll see.

I also took another look at Gary Frank's cover for the "Rebirth" one shot:

I noticed that the Superman on that cover is not the New 52-Superman. The low collar and the cuffs indicate that it's Pre-Flashpoint Superman in the new costume (although that one has no beltbuckle the way it is shown on this cover, but it is in the design sketch shown in the WonderCon article linked a few pages back). Now, he, like all the other characters on that cover, is reaching out towards a hand at the center of the lightning. Now, I've previously attached the rumour about a "beloved character" returning to the pre-Flashpoint Superman becoming main Superman, but after noticing the above, this doesn't hold out.

Now, the hand coming out of nowhere is a familiar motif, though, in DC lore. Might this actually be the hand of creation from the beginning of the multiverse?!

Could they be bringing back the Pandora storyline from the ending of Flashpoint to partially restore the old universe? I know she had her own comic or something but I never read it so I don't know what happened with her.

i'm not crazy about Mera changing her costume and calling herself Aquawoman.

I take it as the lightning is changing them. Batman's top part is colored differently, for instance. The belt-buckle could be the New-52 costume.

It is posed as an homage to "The Creation of Adam." Make sense since Superman is (arguably) the first super-hero. Plus, the hand of creation is usually shown to be much larger. Of course, that was pre-New 52. I can't speak for post-New 52.

Batman is wearing his new Capullo designed costume. Jessica Cruz is dressed as a Green Lantern rather than Power Ring. J'Onn's face looks like his classic appearance. There are portions of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman that are outlined by lightning where the color is sharper. Superman's right hand and belt seems to be in the darker rebirth costume The rest looks like his pre-52 costume.

I have a crazier theory, based on the cover to Superman #51, the first chapter of the "Super League" storyline that will lead into Rebirth, which shows Superman, according to the cover copy, "At the heart of the sun."

It could be All Star Superman/Superman Prime from Grant Morrison's All-Star Superman and DC One Million.

It probably isn't that Superman at all, but it's a wild idea all the same. :)

According to Superman #51

The New 52 Superman is dying as a result of exposure to large amounts of Kryptonite, the stress of fighting Rao in JLA, and The Darkseid War in Justice League.

Superman Homepage did an audio interview with Dan Jurgens on his upcoming work on Action Comics and the current Superman: Lois & Clark series leading up to it.

I reading through the Darkseid War now. There are a couple of major slip ups involving Green Lantern. Oa still exists and apparently the guardians are still alive--how can Johns make such a glaring error considering his long time run on GL?

I believe it is "out of continuity" (not exactly "Elseworlds" but not in sync with rest of the titles. At least that's how I've read them.

Apparently in the last couple of years they've decided to stop having continuity between franchises, which was a true WTF for me. So the characters in Justice League are not the characters in the individual series and not the characters in Bryan Hitch's JLA.

I'm so glad we're rebooting again

I thought the DCYOU thing was to not hold so tightly to continuity between books, not to throw it out altogether. For example, I don't really mind Green Lantern being there as the story takes place at a different time than what is happening in his own book, and the Justice League had really been missing him for a long time.

I stopped reading Green Lantern, but isn't Hal a cosmic hobo in a hoodie banned from Earth or something? Meanwhile he's the normal GL in JL. And Bruce Wayne Batman was in JL while Gordon was Bats. And Superman was normal in JL while he was depowered and exposed or what have you in his issues. So when exactly is the Darkseid War supposed to be taking place?

I think the crucial part is "timing". While the JLA book is published simultaneously with all the other books, the story that takes months to tell does take far less time to happen in-universe. And that's true for all long story arcs nowadays. So, while it might seem like a contradiction that Hal Jordan would be going through hell in his own book, but is his status quo self in the JLA book, it's really just a matter of one story being set after the other while being told simultaneously.
