DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

Richard Matheson would disagree. His philosophy was that if you want to include a fantastic element in a story, it's important to keep everything around it as grounded and believable as possible to facilitate suspension of disbelief.
With all respect to Matheson — and he deserves enormous respect — I’m not sure how much this applies to superhero comics (or adaptations thereof), which are usually stuffed full to bursting with virtually nothing but fantastic elements.

But I mean, if the cube Earth didn’t work for you, then it didn’t work for you. No harm no foul.

I don’t think he would agree that it is okay to suck all the fun out of a story.

For me, a cubical planet or star just goes too far.

Why? Different universe, different laws of physics.

Did Richard Matheson write superhero comic books? Or superhero movies, or TV?

Yes, genre matters. No such rules are universal. These stories virtually never consist of "one fantastic element;" the very fabric of the fictional universes they take place in is woven of the impossible and magical, dressed up by the use of jargon popularized by 20th century pulp science fiction.

It seems that there is a countdown display in Times Square from DC Studios, teasing that “something is coming” at 1:15 p.m. EST today. All the rumors had the teaser trailer making its debut tomorrow, but I won’t be mad if they were wrong.

ETA: Some are saying it’s just a poster, and the trailer is still tomorrow. Guess we’ll find out in about an hour and a half.

Turns out it is just a poster today.

Trailer releases tomorrow at noon ET. :techman:

I still stand that "Call me" by Blondie SHOULD have been used in Doctor Who at some point. Maybe during Capaldi's era. It sounds alot like the Doctor Who theme

Trailer countdown in 22 hours

Some Guardians of the Galaxy vibes in that teaser

Having not read anything about the comics it's based on I'm assuming that this movie will establish the off world, alien element of this new DCU

Which is cool!

It's a fairly simple poster, but it does seem to do a pretty good job of setting up the tone of the movie. Definitely looking forward to the trailer tomorrow.

What outrage was there last summer? I don't really follow those sorts of things
I don’t really know what that means either. I remember there was a blink-and-you-miss-it minor kerfuffle because Gunn spoke the objective fact that Superman is an immigrant and MAGA was triggered like Pavlov’s xenophobic dog, but that’s it.

Unless somebody ginned up some clickbait controversy about “the American way” that I missed.

I think it was about Clark saying "Truth, justice and a better tomorrow" instead of the old-time slogan "Truth, justice and the American way."

Because certain people were looking for things to be pissed off about.

Looking at it, I can see where, yeah, this may be a bit of a goof on all that.

Aaaand I’ve now seen headlines saying, “James Gunn Continues to Remove ‘America’ from Supergirl Movie Slogan,” and “James Gunn’s Woke DCU Mocks America Again with Supergirl.”

No, I didn’t click.
That was too easy to predict.

I'm surprised people don't remember that. That was one of the things brought up behind the woke claims last year. I knew as soon as I saw that poster what that was about and how quick it would piss off the anti woke crowd.

I'm so glad I grew up in an era where movies were something to look forward to and not something used as a wedge for social agendas.

I swear guardians did the same thing with individual promotion of characters. I know Superman 2025 did something like this
