DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

But the thing is, to me, it's just not the JSA without some of the core characters, especially Green Lantern Alan Scott and Flash Jay Garrick. And, yeah, I've always liked Wildcat too.

Every adaptation is its own entity, its own reality. What matters isn't whether it's similar to something else, just whether it's good on its own terms. I've never cared about much Dr. Fate or Hawkman in general, but I liked these specific versions of them.

So, these ads were included in this week's DC Comics, apparently:

All those other bands are fictional bands in the DC Universe. Mucous Membrane was the band John Constantine played in, Black Canary is the band of, obviously, Black Canary, Banshees of Metropolis is the band of Silver Banshee and The Great Frog is really deep cut, they're from the 1970s comics featuring Roy Harper (aka Speedy, Arsenal and Red Arrow) and Mal Duncan (second Guardian) of Teen Titans fame.

It's so great to have DC movies and TV that are such inspired fun.

I've liked all of Gunn's stuff that I've seen over the years. But between Creature Commandos, Superman, and Peacemaker this year i've become a devoted fan.

If this place means anything comparatively speaking, Superman is being talked about more than Fantastic Four. The two review threads are roughly 900 comments for Supes vs. 160 for F4.

One of the folks tracking these films was talking about the legs of the two movies, and said that while all the FF WOM is positive, it's not tending to be as energetically enthusiastic as for Superman. "Not driving walk-ups" is the phrase; it's very satisfying to the tradition CBM audience.

I have to confess, even though I'm a bigger Marvel fan both with the comics and the movies, I actually enjoyed Superman more than FF. It was the complete opposite of what I'd been expecting since the movies were announced.

I have to admit, when they started talking about how much Lois was a punk rock fan I was a little shocked that they mentioned Mucus Membrane.
After my last post, I felt like I really should have included this:

I'm the opposite, a DC fan (except for a sting collecting the X titles) who really likes and appreciates most of the Marvel movies.

Fact is, up to Endgame at least, most of Marvel's films were just excellent. It was truly amazing what they pulled off, with solo films for their characters before bringing them together in Avengers. Yes, recently they've been accused of repetition and running the well dry, but, my gosh, just the consistency they had for so long is pretty amazing. The ironic thing is that Kevin Feige says that his prototype for all Marvel movies is Richard Donner's Superman.

In contrast, DC largely failed to start its own universe, first with the terrible Green Lantern movie (everything was wrong with that film) and then by having Zach Snyder usher in the DCEU with Superman and Batman v Superman. What we got was some films with very dour tones (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Black Adam, etc.), and a lot of projects that had B or C-level characters. Big characters were in movies that weren't that good and B and C-level characters (e.g. Blue Beetler and Birds of Prey), while doing well with critics didn't do well at the box office.

I think Marvel has just done great and they have a lot to be proud of. With Gunn's Superman, hopefully better days are ahead for DC.

For Marvel, I think they can very well get through this tough time. The FF movie sounds like a lot of fun (I have fond memories of reading FF as a kid, especially on summer vacations) and the X-men reboot should be great (I always loved the X-men, I think it's one of Marvel's best franchises, along with Spiderman). It sounds like they're heading into Secret Wars which will be something of a reset to their universe, right, so they can take that opportunity to recast Iron Man and Cap.
