DC Cinematic Universe ( The James Gunn era)

For some reason I can't get excited about this. Lobo has always felt 'Wolverine-lite' to me, even though I know that's not always the case.
The only time I enjoyed his appearance was when he was in Giffen-DeMatteis 'Justice League' series.

Excellent.

Edit - Variety is claiming that it’s for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, though I’m not quite sure where they get that from.

WB or DC Studios may have sent a newsletter to Momoa to publish along with the post before his Instagram post. or they may have gotten inside information.

I will be very displeased if this proves true.

There was fan speculation a while back that they might swap out the graphic novel's character of Krem for Lobo in the film adaptation, but they've already cast Krem, and Lobo has no place in the narrative unless it radically departs from the original story. Bleh I say.
Either way, I think it would be unwise to pin your hopes on a faithful adaptation of the story.

He was intended as a parody of Wolverine type characters.

Which is just why he doesn't work for me. He's too extreme a character to take seriously as part of the mainstream universe, as opposed to a standalone parody. I mean, he annihilated his own species on a whim, and yet we're supposed to find him a fun, comical antihero? That's just taking it way too far.

Not a problem.

Lobo tends to be the convenient hero or annoyance who wants to be paid for his trouble. "The Main Man" is very wrestler personality so he can be both the heavy and comic relief.

They rarely ever stick that close to the comics when they do these adaptations, so I always expected them make some pretty drastic changes.
As for the casting, it's pretty much perfect, although Supergirl does seem like kind of a strange place to introduce him. When they introduced him, I assumed it would be in something more silly and over the top, since that seems to be where the character fits best.

On the other hand, Lobo's first live-action appearance was in Syfy's Krypton, which was a pretty serious show.

Yeah, that really shocked me. I've only seen the first handful of episodes of Season 1, so I have no idea what exactly his role was on the show.

Comic relief, basically. Krypton was indeed a pretty serious show for the most part, but there seemed to be something of an effort to inject more humor in the second season, at least initially. Lobo was the most obvious evidence of that.

Lobo was a guest star in season 2's first 3 episodes and the finale, so it wasn't a central role. He was played by Emmett J Scanlan, who'd previously been in Constantine as Jim Corrigan (the future Spectre), a role in which I found him incredibly awful. I was surprised that he was actually moderately competent as Lobo, but I still didn't like the character.
