Meh. I prefer no trunks but it’s hardly a significant point to me. I always thought I wanted the suit without the trunks, until I actually saw the suit without the trunks.
You're right, whether or not they are there shouldn't affect ticket sales.
It's hardly make-or-break, but every right decision helps, at least a little. And trunks are the right decision. Best-looking live-action Supes costume this century, and much better than most of them. 
(To be clear, I'm talking major suits, not minor one-offs. Hoechlin's Fleischer suit and Routh's CoIE suit were great also.)

Perhaps not in the parallel universe where a DCFU and a DCOU are real things...
Trunks are unnecessary to achieve a great Superman costume (as the Cavill version proved) as they are quite ridiculous and serve no practical or visual interest purpose, but that is far from the make-or-break decision of this film. Anyone can ignore the trunks.
