Is this some kind of record? A full 3 and a half weeks prior to the month it's scheduled? I know these things start showing up around the middle of the preceding month, but at the beginning?
Hell, I haven't even received Night of the Wolves yet and it was shipped as soon as it was released.

i put off reading day of vipers because i wanted to finish up the brothers keeper trilogy and figured i would have plenty of time to read these. i'm only half way though the 2nd book. they are a lot bigger than i anticipated, which in this case is turning out to be a good thing. i'm enjoying this series a lot.
It's unusual, but the June 2005 book (Articles of the Federation) was also in some stores in the first week of the month, so it's not unprecedented.
I guess it works in your factor guys because everyplace I look for the book says it ships within 2 or 3 days to 1 to 2 weeks. One place told me they have to special order it while a Barnes and Nobles near me told me they are only recieving 8 copies.... 8 copies? What the hell?

They order as many copies as they think they can sell, which of course varies from book to book. If they only sell about 8 copies of one Trek novel, that may be all they'll order for the next one, even if there might be a higher demand.
While I understand what you are saying, It isn't possible to know how many books will sell in advance. How can you? Especially when every book is different.

Despite you first half-sentence you don't seem to understand what he said.
The reason why there are more copies of Star Wars in your example is most likely that previous Star Wars novels/novels by the author have sold around 20-30 copies, and only a handful of Star Trek novels/novels by the author.
So because they can't know how well a novel will sell in advance, they use the data they have: the sales of previous novels similar to the one they are now selling.
Right. It's a crapshoot every time (see example below), but the bookstore still has to use the evidence it has to make a best guess. They can't order large numbers of every book and just have them sit there.
My local Borders had very few copies of Titan: Taking Wing, which was a very successful book that reprinted before it was even on sale; they ran out of copies pretty quickly. They had many many copies of the next Titan book, presumably so they wouldn't fall short again; those copies sat there for months.
Again, that'll be a response to local demand; more people are buying Star Wars books there than are buying Trek books.
