Dating

I'll check that one when I get home backstept.

Thanks for that suggestion Joe, Soulmates is head and shoulders above the other sites I've been using (though no chat room - booooo!) in terms of the caliber of the members: they seem a bit more clever and genuinely interested in using the site to meet people and the profiles are better as a result. They also allow you to use paragraphs in your descriptions, which bizarrely appears to be the exception to the rule! Definitely looking forward to messaging some women tonight.

One thing I found really amusing about other sites is the number of people that have no clue about their profile photos. I cannot tell you how many I've seen where the person in the picture has some off expression, or better yet is hopelessly out of focus.

I got "winked" at by a woman from match.com who had eight photos, only one of which wasn't too dark or blurry to make out. The one you could see looked like she just got ambushed by paparazzi, though it seemed to be a self-shot with a mobile phone.

I may be biased but I had pretty good results with Match.com. We've been together 7 years, been married for 4 years this July and have a 15 month old daughter!

It may feel strange to send an email to to some random stranger but I think it's a great way to present yourself. A well thought out, honest and sincere email will go further than you think. I was astonished at the kinds of emails my wife got and she told me the reason she responded to mu email was because it wasn't like the rest of the idiots who were emailing her.

I have mailed a few at match.com and I'm only a week into a six-month subscription, so I've not written it off. My first impression is definitely better than either Plenty of Fish or Geek2Geek...

You might have to send a lot of mails, I've tried a couple of sites. Read their profiles sent messages based on what they've written in their profile. And barely get a response, not even a Thanks but no thanks.

Yes I know they'll get a lot of messages, but i guess it does make that one that replies more special.

I'm not fussed about not getting a reply myself because in many cases the profiles are pretty thin and I'm just going on physical attraction; which is why I think online chat would be a big help.

I find it a bit depressing looking through the same vague two sentences and a pretty face, whereas actual interaction can compensate greatly for a poorly thought-out profile.

Incredibly one of the people I "liked" on Guardian Soulmates has liked me back, despite my lack of a photo. Damn I'm good! Shit now I have to subscribe; this one is a bit steep, so I think I'll just for one month initially.

Whilst I will occasionally message someone with a slim profile, I tend to favour those that have a bit more in their profile.

try OKCupid :techman:
I can recommend OKCupid also, because I met my current girlfriend there..and made at least one good friend from there:)
I do not know if they have those polls and tests there still..but making them is actually fun and beneficial to ones profile and so on. Using the "flirt/poke" function is also good idea, because many women actually wrote me because of it..not much, just a thanks really but its easier to write them more then.

Wait, is MacLeod a woman too??!!??

I thought that wasn't strictly necessary.

Hmmm, I can read this as, you felt it wasn't necessary to make that outburst or I'm not exclusively attracted to women so therefore I don't need him to be.

Well, if the former, you're right, sometimes less is more.

If the latter, although I can be attracted to men I'm not seeking them out. I don't have sexual fantasies about men, but if I met the right guy something could happen, sure. Even so I probably wouldn't be that great a same-sex partner, seeing as I'm more attracted to women generally. I know if the shoes were reversed I'd feel like "he's checking out chicks all the time," which would be unfair.

@JRS: match.com has those little quizzes as well and I agree they seem like a decent icebreaker. I should complete one of those. I've had two "likes" on Soulmates and have sent two messages. Let's see what happens!

It was the latter but your whole explanation was so charming it doesn't really matter any more. You'll slay 'em.

I use okcupid, yes I've had a couple of dates of it, more than other sites. Plus I chat to a couple of the people on there. So i've had some limited success on it.

Dating sites are consistent failures for me. Not sure why, guess I don't know how to work the system on there or soemthing. Much better for me in-person (like at say a cafe or school etc.) even if it's a little more difficult to approach someone IRL than it is on the internet.

I'll give that a shot after my divorce comes through. I'm not comfortable choosing "single" as an option when I'm not legally.

Hmm its a wonder most websites, particulary dating ones (where personality and individuality is encouraged) don't allow you to custom enter your status.

Most of them seem to have selection of four Single, Separated, Divorced, Decline to State; some also list married (I guess for swingers).

OK Cupid lacks Separated and Divorced options so it's just single. I suppose divorced is technically single, but some people are wary of history like that; separated is like purgatory from the perspective of many. I asked in the J-Date chat room if women avoid men who are listed as Separated and it was unanimous that this was the "scarlet letter" of online dating. The feeling is that there's unresolved baggage and it's best avoided, which I can see.
