Nah, I'm just using hyperbole to illustrate my view that others are overreacting to a teeny tiny costuming error that is extremely common in Star Trek.

This what Trek fans DO. We talk the minutiae. We do it decades after a show is gone off the air. If you want to go round critiquing whether threads and opinions are valid we'd have no fucking board.

Data is explicitly referred to as commander in the past so definitely one of many costume errors across the franchise.

Oddly placed or missing combadges are another one where I'm like who didnt notice this when I see it. And about 5 seconds after the episode I've forgotten all about it.

Data might have been a LCDR, but he was rarely placed in command. Perhaps Picard remembered Datas limitations and chose Yar to command the ship
It was definitely a costuming error. Can't even retcon it as Data getting a promotion to Lt. Cmdr. between Picard taking command and the journey to Farpoint station. Why?

An assumption that everyone would be promoted at his somewhat glacial pace.
If I recall someone somewhere addressed this in a short story in an anthology where Picard during the in between years met Lt Data who had no drive or ambition and just followed orders precisely until Picard encouraged to take initiative and do more than just what he was told.
Of course the nature of TV shows being what they are Data would then languish at lt commander for 15 years because heroes have to stagnate at a certain point.
I wonder if anti-android bias is why no one ever offered Data a promotion and transfer to another ship to become XO.
There's that whole subplot in Redemption about him learning how to deal with people, which then doesn't really go anywhere.
And they do exactly the same subplot in Gambit, with Worf in the Hobson role. And still nothing really becomes of it.
Dr Crusher had a more interesting command arc than Data!
But that's TV to some extent. Exactly why Riker's career stalled. At least Worf got out of there and developed his career on DS9.
