Spoilers Dark PhoeniX - Review and Discussion Thread

For his faults as a writer and/or director, I give him big points for his awareness and ownership of the film.

Especially this quote: "...If the lesson you’ve learned is that you had the wrong date or you didn’t have good marketing--that’s not a lesson.”

Far too many members of Hollywood grasp at desperate answers to why their project failed, as though it couldn't possibly be the film itself. You can't fight disinterest.

And if nothing else, Kinberg gave us Days of Future Past. Which I enjoyed the hell out of. And for all The Last Stand's faults, it has Kelsey Grammer as Beast saying, "Oh, my stars and garters." And the scene where Magneto fucks up an entire convoy and then coldly abandons Mystique for no longer being "one of us." Plus that great scene where Magneto flips shit on Pyro for celebrating Xavier's death. "Charles Xavier did more for mutants than you will ever know. My single greatest regret is that he had to die for our dream to live."

The Last Stand got a lot wrong, but it got a lot right too. I'm more than willing to re-watch it to get from X-Men/X2 to First Class/The Wolverine/Days of Future Past/Logan. Whereas I'll never watch Origins: Wolverine or Apocalypse again.

In these movies Magneto is not the Master of Magnetism, he "controls metal" which is weird, but it might have been a glitch in one script, or a dummy in-universe who understood Eric's powers wrong.

In the dearly departed Ultimate Universe, Mutants were given Reservations (A similar deal to what Native Americans have) that looked a lot like where Eric was living in this shitty movie, and to live in packing crates, which looked a lot alike too.

Magneto was perhaps a Government Ward, or a mayor-emperor of a sovereign territory that relied exclusively on US aid? But the Government knew where Magneto was who could have dealt to the out of control space shuttle faster and more elegantly, whether he was the master of magnetism or "controls metal".

Xavier describes his powers as "...create magnetic fields and control metal." Isn't that right?

As far as I know, comics Erik can affect both ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

I'd question the definition of the word "and".

It's likely that the "and" in question means "therefore" meaning that it's the magnetism that controls metal, but this "and" could mean "also" which might suggest that Magneto has two powers. One is to create Magnetic fields and the other is to control metal.

Google tells me to look at his prisons.

The first in X-Men, was totally plastic.

The second, in Days of Future past, the Pentagon, was totally concrete.

Zero non ferrous metal.

The shuttle's ceramic tiles, might insulate the metal frame of the shuttle, from Magnetos powers?

One small question: having just seen it again (liking it better and better), I could have sworn some of the D'Bari who attacked the train were other members of that dinner party that Chastain was part of - in particular, the short dark haired woman that Nightcrawler takes care of by bamfing her in front of the train. Can anyone confirm or deny?

If the answer is yes, then conceivably they could have made Jean's dad one of the attackers in the finale. Wouldn't that have been a mindf---k for Jean!

Way better than I expected - certainly in a par with most of them, with the exceptions of the superior X2 and DOFP.

Not going out on a dud like Last Stand after all. Not that that's how it will be remembered.

In DOFP, my friend's 10 year old asked why they didn't make the sentinels out of non-ferrous metals. I think the writers felt that bringing too much real world science into movies just confuses people; sorry, I mean Americans.

Broadly. They should reference DoFP but they don't. It doesn't wrap up every plot thread though.

It's a sequel to Apocalypse. That's about all I could tell you.

I give it a B-. It's definitely not as bad as some critics are saying. 24% on RT is ridiculous. The only thing I really hate about this movie is Tye Sheridan's Cyclops. He is woefully miscast.

The ability to control magnetic fields leads to the ability to control ferrous metals as a logical extension of the character's abilities. Control of metal seems like a whole thing on its own, possibly thrown because of the province of non ferrous alloys in, modern life. Many other elements become metallic under certain conditions. Can he control mercury? Hydrogen? If not, why not? I'm with the kid!

Taking it to the other extreme, if he can control energy on the electromagnetic spectrum, how far does that extend, and why? Strong magnetic fields can suspend non magnetic objects too. Science and super heroes... We should never think too carefully.

Next they'll be saying that Mystique's ability to manipulate a limited number of her genes relating to her appearance will allow robots to develop countermeasures to any ability in a few short years. Crazy!

If so, any anti-mutant-powers dampening-effect should have turned their metal like exterior shell into soft human regular, but blue, flesh, and the Sentinels would have collapsed under their own massive weight.

Saw the movie today. It was great.
Seems the only crime it made was coming after 'Avengers'.
I don't know much about 'Dark Phoenix' from the comics and how it should be done but as a movie this was pretty solid. Better than the Ivan Oooze x-men movie. My only issues were that there wasn't enough Quicksilver and no new Mutants were introduced beyond the dreadlock guy.

That's obviously the primary reason the movie is disliked: because of the prerelease Ivan Ooze campaign.
