Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comments?

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

Not to hijack your thread, but I just put the finishing touches on a 350-man crew list for a medium cruiser. Rather than post the entire list, here's the summary:
Code:
Officers ...... 55
O-6 .. CAPT ... 1
O-5 .. CMDR ... 1
O-4 .. LCDR ... 5
O-3 .. LT ..... 20
O-2 .. LT-jg .. 28
Enlisted ...... 245
E-8 .. SCPO ... 1
E-7 .. CPO .... 10
E-6 .. PO1 .... 32
E-5 .. PO2 .... 66
E-4 .. PO3 .... 76
E-3 .. E-3 .... 60
Marines ....... 50
O-2 .. 1Lt .... 1
O-1 .. 2Lt .... 2
E-7 .. GnySgt . 1
E-6 .. SSgt ... 2
E-5 .. Sgt .... 8
E-4 .. Crpl ... 12
E-3 .. L-Cpl .. 12
E-2 .. PFC .... 12
And by sections:

Code:
7 .... Command
19 ... Bridge Ops
17 ... Comm/Info Tech
13 ... Sensors
12 ... Intelligence
22 ... Logistics/Services
9 .... Scientists
11 ... Science Lab Tech
9 .... Stellar Cartography
42 ... Weapons
25 ... Engine Room
33 ... Engineering Maintenance / Damage Control
15 ... Medical
6 .... Shuttle Pilots
6 .... Flight Engineer
22 ... Shuttle Maintenance
27 ... Security
50 ... Marine Platoon
5 .... Marine Support: Field Medics / Field Sensor Tech
My wife looked my first draft over and pointed out a few (25) "missing" crewmen. So if you saw the earlier version, it's changed.

I have come down with a case of horrific food poisoning, been out of action since Wednesday and still feeling poorly. I have skimmed over the last few posts but will respond properly when I feel better! Just didn't want you guys to think I was ignoring you!

I'm thinking the entire starship transporter system could be destroyed
Perhaps the ship encounters a phenomenon that causes damage that effect the transporter more so than other systems. It chemically changes a unique component, a material, that isn't used through out the ship. This could account for the transporters in the shuttles also being rendered useless, as well as any in stores.

And the replicator can't produce the material.

:)

Perhaps have the ship end up in a system where subspace is damaged in such a way that makes using the transporter difficult at best and chaotic at worst, that the only way anything over fifty percent materialisation can be achieved is by having a reciever at the end point - so no beaming to a planetary surface, you'd need to send a shuttle down to, at the very least, act as an anchor point for subsequent transporter beaming.

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

I don't know about all that. If they have transporters but they just stopped working, why was the ship designed with so many shuttles in the first place? He has twice the number of shuttles one would expect on a ship this size. It makes sense to have that many if he says there is no transporter technology in his parallel universe. Or perhaps in his world, transporters only work pad-to-pad and thus you can't beam down to wherever you want. Indeed, I just might use that idea in my world, if I ever get back into writing.

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

I am finally feeling better, so now to reply to all of your wonderful posts..

Our biggest self-inflicted wound was how we treated our people. Other career fields had far better work schedules. Last time I deployed, I had a three-man shop (including myself) to run 24/7 ops for 90+ days. The other two duty sections in my building had five-man teams. I was told I had the option of 4-on/2-off or 2-on/1-off 12-hour shifts, flipping days to nights and back each rotation. We said *bleep* that, we're too danged old to kill ourselves with that sleep pattern, and so we worked straight 8-hour shifts, one of each per shift days/swings/mids, no flipping around but zero days off for 99 days. The worst schedule I've ever worked was 2-days/2-swings/2-mids/3-off. After a month or so of that, I wanted to kill the person who suggested it to the boss. We did that for eight months before a new boss came in and said "Now, that's just blinking stupid!"

This post and your previous one about shift rotation has convinced me to up most of the Departments to four people at a minimum. I'd have thought an "Enlightened" Federation which has robust employment law would make sure that all of Starfleet would be able to have a good number of breaks!

Alright for a laugh I'd do it how I'd want it, missing a tonne but I think you can see what I'm aiming for.

I'm doing it in a slightly different style, as I have a core member requirements and a rotation pool included for each section.

[SNIP]

Ahh, rotation pool! I like that idea a lot; I'm going to have to somehow incorporate it into my next draft. Nice crew list you have there; what sort of ship have you envisioned it to be?

So, while I'm typing another book-of-the-month message (which I'll post later), my wife who happens to be a retired Navy Yeoman finds this document: http://www.militaryresearch.org/1944%20DE%20Organization.pdf

Incredible, isn't it?? Granted, there's a lot that doesn't fit the Trek universe, but it's a heck of a starting point, no?

Brilliant, thanks for that. I have been scouring the net for resources like that.. something else that I have found very useful is the various US Navy Cruise Books which detail a lot of the crew. It's not particularly useful for knowing who does what.. but I think it gives a really good feel of the various ships and their complements.

Autistoid kinda beat me to the punch. I wanted to talk about the different divisions / departments of a ship, too. So here goes.

[SNIP]

Wow that is very comprehensive. A few questions:

How vital do you think an Intelligence section is? As far as we know we've never seen a Section on-screen on-board a ship (though I'm already playing fast and loose with the canon so maybe it doesn't matter). I always assumed that Intelligence would be very combat-orientated, and not that relevant for a ship like mine which is science based. But then again! I like how you've got them compiling and writing reports back to Command.. that is a good idea; someone has to go through all the reports that the Bridge crew make each episode, as I can't imagine it's something the Captain himself does. Since the reports would include highly sensitive information, what sort of rating/ranking do you think would be suitable for the guy who does this job? Speaking of.. is there any breakdown you know of what kind of security clearances go where in terms of ratings and ranks?

I've used the term Tactical as well in my list; why don't you like the term? For phase banks, do you have a 'Phaser Room' type area where the crewmen live? We saw that in TOS but as far as I am aware from TNG onwards phase control was controlled directly from the Tactical position on the bridge.

Rest of your stuff is very logical and makes a lot of sense, thank you again for the effort you put into it.

Verrryyy nice. Did you do a full listing of crewmembers, and if so would you be able to share it? In any case the breakdown of Officers vs Enlisted is extremely helpful.

Something I was thinking was: when the ship traverses the Collapsar, the distortion effects knocks out all electroenergy when they get to the other side. This puts everyone unconscious (they come around immediately) and even knocks out the artificial gravity. I was also going to include massive sheering effects on the hull and radiation damage to the computer core.. so maybe we can have the transporter emitters destroyed and the entire transporter computer system damaged beyond repair.

I don't know about all that. If they have transporters but they just stopped working, why was the ship designed with so many shuttles in the first place? Your right though, I need to be able to gell all my shuttles with possible existing transporter tech. I like the idea of pad-to-pad only, that would get around the discrepancy.

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

I've used the term Tactical as well in my list; why don't you like the term?
Well, to me, "tactical" covers much more than just weapon systems. Also, the police cutter that I did deck plans and crew list for doesn't have Marines but rather a Tactical Team to do all the boarding party actions and such.
For phase banks, do you have a 'Phaser Room' type area where the crewmen live? We saw that in TOS but as far as I am aware from TNG onwards phase control was controlled directly from the Tactical position on the bridge.
Yes, I do. The officer on the bridge has the master FIRE button, but each weapon needs a crew to prep it for firing and as such they have manual control over it (with safety lock-outs from the Bridge to prevent a crewman from launching an unauthorized photon torpedo during peace negotiations).

The ship I'm working on has two photon tubes and four pairs of phasers plus a pair of point-defense phasers. The patrol mod has two more pairs of phasers, whereas the combat mod has two more photon tubes and four more pairs of phasers. That's just too many weapons to control all from one bridge station, even with future-modern computer controls and automation. Ergo, in my world, each photon tube has three crew assigned, and each pair of phasers has two crew assigned.

Here's something I wrote a few years back and thought might be a good addition to this conversation. Am interested in any and all comments anyone may have on this.

******

Akula Class Manning

This is my proposal for the manning on an Akula sub-class PA as described in “Ships of the Star Fleet Volume Two”. That book describes a crew composition of 7 officers and 68 enlisted personnel. I have further broken down the enlisted crew to consist of 1 SCPO, 3 CPOs, 28 Pos, and 36 junior enlisted personnel. The book also describes the CO of a PA as being a Lieutenant commander (O-4) or a senior Lieutenant (O-3). Enlisted grades are as follows:

SCPO = E-8
CPO = E-7
PO = grades E-4 through E-6
Junior enlisted are grades E-1 through E-3.

Commanding Officer (Lcdr. Or Lt.)
Executive/Strategic Officer (Lt.) [see Note 1]
Navigation Officer (Ens. Or Lt(jg).)
Coxswain (SCPO) [Note 2]
Flight Controllers (x5) (all PO) [Note 3]
Yeoman (junior enlisted)

Chief Engineer (Lt(jg). Or Lt.)
Warp Propulsion Specialists (x3) (1 CPO, 2 PO)
Impulse Propulsion Specialist (x3) (1 PO, 2 enl)
Power Distribution Specialists (x3) (1 PO, 2 enl)
Computer/Auxiliary Systems Spec. (x3) (1 PO, 2 enl) [Note 4]
Transporter Specialists (x3) (3 PO)

Tactical/Weapons Officer (Lt.) [Note 5]
Fire Control specialists (x3) (1 PO, 2 enl) [Note 6]
Defense Systems Specialists (x3) (1 PO, 2 enl) [Note 7]
Phaser Systems Technicians (x3) (1 PO, 2 enl)
Torpedo Specialists (x6) (2 PO, 4 enl)
Security Specialists (x6) (1 PO, 5 enl) [Note 8]

Medical Officer (Lt(jg).) [Note 9]
Medical Technicians (x4) (1 CPO, 3 PO)

Operations Officer (Lt(jg).) [Note 10]
Intel/Ops Specialists (x12) (1 CPO, 2 PO, 9 enl) [Note 11]
Communications Tech. (x3) (1 PO, 2 enl)

Sciences/Sensor Tech. (x6) (3 PO, 3 enl) [Note 12]

Note 1 – Quarters shown in deckplans for “Strategic Officer” look to be for a senior officer, so I doubled this position with that of the XO.

Note 2 – The coxswain is the de facto Chief Helmsman. Also serves as the senior enlisted person aboard ship (see “Chief of the Boat” in current USN submarine service).

Note 3 – With the Coxswain, are responsible for maneuvering and navigation of the ship.

Note 4 – Responsible for maintenance of computer systems and general diagnostic engineering of other systems. Damage control when needed.

Note 5 – also indicated as having larger quarters, assumed to be third in command.

Note 6 – these personnel man the Weapon Systems station on the bridge.

Note 7 – These personnel man the Defensive systems station on the bridge.

Note 8 – Internal Security and boarding parties during Border/Customs assignments. Damage control as necessary.

Note 9 – May double as Science officer when necessary.

Note 10 – Oversees the general operations of the vessel, and command of the CIC on Deck 2.

Note 11 – these personnel man the CIC on Deck 2. three per shift in normal conditions, six in alternating shifts during combat.

Note 12 – In addition to manning the Science Station on the bridge, these personnel are responsible for the maintenance, launch, and recovery of the intelligence drones and sensor probes.

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

That seems like a reasonable blend of what the TV show writers would come up with and what reality would dictate. Indeed, I think it's closer to the later, and I would find it acceptable for fictional writings. However, if this were for a "real" star ship, I would expect to see a lot more crew members for engineering & maintenance, and possible more weaponeers. That said, I can't find fault in the list, especially if you were constrained by a published count of the crew size, which I presume you had.

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

^^^^Yup. Extrapolated from published crew complement and the deckplans in the back of the book.

I would have liked more engineers and ordnance folk, too, but balanced it the best I could.

Figure in a pinch the sciences/probe launchers can reinforce the torpedo specialists. And anyone else not otherwise occupied can be doing damage control freeing up the engineers for more specialized needs/tasks. Being a small crew in a small ship a large distance from pretty-much everywhere no one in a PA crew is going to be a strict one-subject specialist. Everyone is going to have some sort of cross-training to one degree or another just for basic practicality, if not all-out survival needs depending on the situation.

So, Mysterion, are you going to give them each a name and background story??? ;-)

Cool user-name by the way!!

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

Ah man, so, I started a brand new job that took up all of my attention for the last month, and just as I was going to start getting back into this project I was involved in a four-vehicle car crash (writing off my car!), so have been dealing with the fallout of that for the last fortnight.

Be careful of what you ask for.

[SNIP]

Ah wow, that's perfectly comprehensive and really wonderful. Thank you.

Well, to me, "tactical" covers much more than just weapon systems. Also, the police cutter that I did deck plans and crew list for doesn't have Marines but rather a Tactical Team to do all the boarding party actions and such.

[SNIP].

That all makes a lot of sense, thank you. I really like the Nu-Trek point defence system, where they don't seem to have phaser banks at all. It might be a little Battlestar Galactica-ey though.

Here's something I wrote a few years back and thought might be a good addition to this conversation. Am interested in any and all comments anyone may have on this.

[SNIP]

Thanks for those references! I've had a look through some, and they seem really really useful for my own list.

I've not done much real work on my own list for the past month. Have been refining down some of the story, might have solved my transporter issue, and also the problem of the main character being a new second-officer.

However what I have done is compiled I think, the final list of shuttlecraft my ship will have.

Code:
[B]Shuttlepods[/B]
Childs Light short-range sublight Shuttlepod
Clerke Light short-range sublight Shuttlepod
Collett Light short-range sublight Shuttlepod

[B]Shuttlecraft[/B]
Richmond	Light medium-range warp Shuttlecraft
Reynolds	Light medium-range warp Shuttlecraft
Reardon Light medium-range warp Shuttlecraft
Terrell Medium medium-range warp Shuttlecraft
Taylor Medium medium-range warp Shuttlecraft

[B]Rangers[/B]
Satterly	Heavy long-range warp Ranger
Solander	Heavy long-range warp Ranger
Saunders	Heavy long-range warp Ranger
[B]
Captain's Yaught[/B]
Pembroke	Heavy medium-range warp Integrated Craft

[B]Workpod	[/B]
Workbee 1	Light extra-vessel Utility Craft
Workbee 2	Light extra-vessel Utility Craft

My question is though: what actually is the difference between the terms Light, Medium, and Heavy? Does it just refer to the size of the shuttle?

The Rangers are basically sitting in-between the Type 11 Shuttlecraft and Runabouts.

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

Cars can be replaced ... but I do hope everyone walked away in reasonable shape.

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

Aye, came away with a broken toe and some aches and bruises, but nothing major. Shame about the car, though!

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

For my Novels Corps of Engineers Mission to Bajor, I - IV, I used the actual crew manifest of a WWII Liberty ship as a guide for my Monarch Class Merchantman.

I suggest you research a WWII cruiser class ship, they held about 350 people.

Good Luck

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

Good pointer! I'd been looking at a few already, and it's definitely a great starter.

The Watch, Quarter, and Station Bill describes your billet, your sea & anchor detail position, damage control station, general quarters position, in-port watch, berthing, lifeboat station, and more. In your own division, there will also be a list of collateral duties, such as the divisional training PO, the supply PO (called Repair Parts PO), Leading Petty Officer, Ass't LPO, Work Center Supervisor (in charge of maintenance scheduling), and other positions.
Akirapide, there's no need for a janitorial staff; each division does their own field day/sweepers/etc. Quartermasters are not supply; we navigate.

I put this up years ago, it covers about a century of rates, so some will be replaced, added, or deleted over time.

Basically, I adapted the current naval enlisted rates
for Trek, and would like some feedback. What am I
missing, what needs tweaking, that sort of thing? If you
prefer enlisted to just all be generic crewman, that's
fine, but I'm not interested in that; I want more
realism. So I am asking for constructive criticism. What
can be trimmed, what needs to be expanded, and what
needs to be clearer?

some links to modern usage, in order to make it easier
to understand. I hope I managed to translate the jargon
enough for clarity. If not, let me know.

E-1 =Seaman/Airman/Fireman/Constructionman Recruit
(SR/AR/FR/CR) =Crewman Recruit (CR)
E-2 = Seaman/etc Apprentice (SA/AA/FA/CA) = Crewman
Apprentice (CA)
E-3 = Seaman/etc (SN/AN/FN/CN) = Crewman (CN)
E-4 =(rate) petty officer 3rd class (ex. BM3) = BM3
E-5 =(rate) p.o. 2nd class (ex.QM2) = QM2
E-6 =(rate) p.o. 1st class (ex. MM1) = TS1
E-7 =(rate) Chief Petty Officer (ex. MAC) = MAC
E-8 =(rate) Senior Chief petty officer (ex. MMCS) = TSCS
E-9 =(rate) Master Chief petty officer (ex. TMCM) = OTCM

Each rate has a two-letter (sometimes three, maybe even
fourletter) short-form, then the long name of the
rating, followed by what current rating (if any)
inspired it, and which dept(s) the rate is appropriate
for. Some small ships really juggle things around;

Rank is senority, while rate is more of pay grade.

A LT could be a higher rank then this other guy who made
just made LT. However they are both the same rate/grade.

Looks interesting.

As a former nuclear technician it is interesting to see
what you got for the propulsion side of engineering.

Just FYI:
We used only three Rates: EM, MM, ET.
While you seem to use five: DE, IE, PT, RT, WE.
Just seems like an awful lot of overlap considering how
much more things would be automated. Also Starfleet
personnel seem to be better trained and less specialized.

On the same topic of overlap, MAs would be security,
inside the GM (weapons) dept, with SGs as temps from
other depts. Thats a close estimate on how the USN
handles security.

I'm also not so sure about Science specialists. LAs seem
to have that role covered. Especially in Starfleet where
every science specialist we saw was an officer. Now, you
can have LAs specializing in different sciences...

Well, I figured Warp and impulse should be separate on
anything larger than the equivalent of a PC, so that
meant IE & WE. But I also felt that shuttles and scouts
would be simple enough that those could be combined in
such a case. Maybe DE should be a qualification,
instead?
PT is supposed to replace EMs, while RT handles the
reactor, based on BTs (later converted to MMs). Also,
note that this is a broad document covering over a
century - they'd probably have more conversions,
additions and deletions than I show.

Officers, yes. Enlisted do specialise more and have less
broad training. It's a symbiotic tradeoff. I know a
number of decent navigators who also did reasonably well
as the Admin officer, PAO, and Legal O, who went on to
become OpsO, DCA, or First LT on other ships. But only
two really knew navigation the way the QM gang did. OS's
need to know navigation to backup the QMs primary plot,
but they also need to know a lot of other things we
don't, and so most OS' don't know navigation as in-depth
as the QM's.

Not on most surface ships. On carriers and amphibs, MAA
is a division of it's own, on small boys it's part of
admin. Security isn't a division or dept on most ships.
However, the Security Alert team and Backup Alert Force
are provided by other sailors as part of their duty day,
around a kernel of the Duty MA and the Comabt
Systems/Weapons types.
I figure SF, however, needs an actual security dept,
augmented the way the surface navy does it. I made SGs
to be security guards the way MAs are when assigned to
Physical Security, while MAs are MAs as they get
assigned to ships. I haven't decided if they should be
folded back into just MAs, or if the division should
stand. Another option is to fold them into RS, Recon
Specialists. As you can see, while I'm certain about
some parts of this conversion, I'm not so sure about
others.

Well, my thinking was that LAs should be able to handle
the basic lab tasks in any lab, but no real substantive
assistance. SS', though, should be able to handle the
routine tasks of running a lab and performing
experiments, much like grad students do for professors.
Maybe LAs should become another subset of SS?

I also figure that, if an experiment shows something,
the SS who did the actual work won't get the credit, the
staff officer scientist who ordered and nominally
supervised it will, much like today, and so we'd rarely
actually even see that the officer has underlings doing
the work while he makes the reports to the skipper and
reaps the rewards for it, thus keeping the surface the
same.

Re: Creating a realistic crew manifest for a Starship. Ideas & comment

The last couple of days I've been looking at how to staff a Defiant-Class ship with no more than 40 officers and crew, which is harder than I thought. Fortunately it would be for straight forward escort and patrol duties, so this is what I arrived at:

Commanding Officer (LT CDR)

First / Chief Security & Tactical Officer (LT)
Watch / Security & Tactical Officer (LT) x2
Security Specialist (PO3-CPO) x3
Security Guard (CRW) x6

Chief Medical Officer (LT)
Corpsman (PO3-PO1) x2

Flight Control Officer (ENS) x3
Relief Flight Controller / Shuttle Pilot (PO3-PO1) x3

Operations Officer (ENS) x3
Operations Specialist (PO3-CPO) x3

Chief of Engineering (CPO)
Engineering Supervisor (CPO) x2
Engineering Specialist (PO3-PO1) x3
Engineer (CRW) x6

If the ship undertakes any other kind of mission then additional personnel can be added as needed (seeing as how they can carry up to 50 crew), but this covers the essentials.
