Kinda late to the party, but I caught this one on the cheap last night.
It was good. I gave it a B. Not the best movie by any means, but not horrible. It would get a straight C if it weren't for solid actors.
I was hoping it was going to remind me of Serenity, but it didn't do that. The humor just wasn't there most of the time.
Is pulled far too many western cliches. I had to groan when they stuck in the weasily kid who gets arrested and says "my paw's gonna get you!" That was a cliche 20 years ago when it was used on Star Trek: TNG!
Someone mentioned there being a lot of people involved - including Spielberg. The film felt like there were too many cooks in the kitchen. I know film making is better a collaborative effort, but it felt like they were throwing in new things every other scene. Yet, the film still dragged at times.
With the film's 150M budget, why did the aliens look so bad? I'm not against all CGI creatures, but they really should have be done with practical effects in situations where they are well lit, as they were in this movie. They didn't feel like they were really there most of the time.
Just my thoughts on the film. I'll definetly rent it when it comes out on DVD. It could have been much better, but I don't think it deserved to be as big of an under performer as it was.
