Could you handle a world where you no longer have the internet?

Sorry guys, I was away in Manchester, back home now to join the conversation again.

The holiday in Manchester involved a lot of internet. I booked the pantomime tickets, hotel and flight with it. I do remember going to my first Stargate convention in 2002 where ahead of time I contacted the city's tourist information who sent me a big catalogue with all hotels and hostels and bed & breakfasts where I chose one from the list to stay in.

I also remember my first flight to the UK in 2006 where I actually went to a local travel office and asked to book a flight to the UK which came up at about 800 Euro which I found a bit steep. A friend then told me about one of the cheap airlines where I booked directly and got a flight for about 80 Euro.

Finally I remember my childhood where my father was the one that had to look up all train times and connections in a big railway guide / timetable for the whole family and I was always afraid I would never manage to be able to use this difficult thing. It literally scared me. Nowadays, you just put your start and target point and the software is doing the rest.

So, booking entertainment tickets and travel organisation is what I use the internet most for.

They just want their money, so each month I go to the office and pay in person and get a receipt. That way I've got two options of how to pay, if one doesn't work.
But what if you are away on holiday? Or too sick to leave the house?

Even today not everyone has a bank account. Try being a homeless person, walking into a bank, and setting up an account with no permanent address or driver's license.
They made a new law in Germany that everyone that wants a bank account shall be able to get it. Turned out the banks were charging more for these than for the regular ones, but I'm sure they'll make a law about that as well.

It's been nearly 14 years since I went anywhere on holiday, and I don't expect to have one any time in the near or mid-future.

The office is in the same building where I live. If I were too sick to go there, I would hope that I could call the manager and she could drop by to pick up a cheque. Of course that would depend on the manager. There have been some here who were absolute bitches, and they were not missed for even a nanosecond when they either quit or were transferred.

The current one, I think, would be willing to be flexible. After all, it's just down two hallways on the same floor.

Three years ago I had some unusual activity on my card where several hundred pounds was removed from my account in small chunks over the course of a few hours when I was out of the country, when I found out, I was straight onto my bank and they replaced the money the same day.

Same thing here. I had some suspicious activity, and my bank called me immediately and replaced the funds, closed the account, and opened a new one for me all within a few hours. I just had to go down and pick up a new debit card.

Of course, sometimes the process works a little too well, and I was on vacation in California, making charges on my account. My car was at the repair shop back home, and I authorized payment with the same debit card. The bank’s warning system triggered with an auto repair charge in Denver, and a restaurant charge in Los Angeles at roughly the same time. Everything was rejected and it took about an hour, and several phone calls to straighten things out.
