News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

Yeah, we're waiting to hear more. He was on his way to his cottage to get prepped for winter when he got notified. He's got a family with two kids of his own and they're all worried about him. Haven't personally seen him in more than 5 years.

I have a new datapoint based on today's visit.

8 hours. :sigh:

If I end up with a breakthrough case, this will be why...

Oh dear! :( I'd be upset enough to possibly write a letter to the local paper. I'm sorry you had to wait for so long. Eight hours during Covid is just bonkers.

On the other hand, it makes me appreciate how little time I spent there when I went recently.

This is why my family and I are back in full quarantine now...

Oh no! That's terrible, I'm so sorry to hear that. :( From what you shared about your brother, that must be especially nerve-wracking. I hope it is just a precautionary thing, and everyone comes out OK.

Eight hours during Covid is just bonkers.

My only consolation is that they do take their preventative measures pretty seriously. We even got masks with the full face shield. And all the other people there seemed really good about following the rules (unlike at, say, the grocery store...)

My hope is that if the staff can be there for 8 hours every day and be fine, that I'll be OK after one day.

And speaking of staff... huge props to all those in the health care profession. I've been in the system a lot over the years, and even with everything going on right now, and after a year and a half of pandemic conditions, they are still generally the kindest, most caring group of professionals you will meet, at least in my experience. The system may be flawed and breaking, but the practitioners are the best.

Sometimes it feels like this is never going to end, and some people are ridiculously, infuriatingly determined to see that it doesn't

Yeah, I find it frustrating that for every person who's been really trying hard and following precautions, there will be people that seemingly seem to think it's all a freaking joke. Why oh why does everything have to be so difficult? I have friends who are unfortunately antivaxxers, and they're often wishing it would end, and yet.... all I can think of is, do your part! It's as if we're doing all the work while they sit around complaining.

Totally agree with both of you. We have friends who consistently broke the rules during our lockdowns in the Uk.

They had parties at home, illegal hair cuts, did not stick to rules on visiting family etc etc etc...but of course when their daughters business was closed again during the second lockdown they were the first to complain about it.

I bite my tongue as cant be bothered with arguing but while they may not be 'fully responsible' for the lockdown and daughters business being closed, they are at least partially responsible as a collective with other people who failed to follow the rules. The discussions we did have fleetingly were along the lines of lockdowns did nothing and were a waste of time. I wanted to ask why they were not employed in the same roles as the likes of Chris Whitty in the UK earning no doubt 6 figure salaries if they were such experts. Of course they are entitled to their opinion too, but in all likelihood they were more likely to be wrong than the likes of My Whitty.

I am not saying had everyone stuck to the rules we wouldnt have had lockdowns, but i do believe they would not have been as severe as they were. Obviously cannot prove that its just my own opinion.

Yep, absolutely with you there. If they're complaining about wishing things would go back to normal, then they should do their part to help it go back to normal. I hate how everything about it has become politicized. The reality is that the virus doesn't care for your political association. It doesn't care if someone is Democrat of Republican. It doesn't even care which part of the world you're in. It only ever cares about finding itself a suitable host for it to spread. The unvaccinated become easy targets, the perfect petri dishes for spreading out new strains, and even if they themselves aren't infected, easily pass it around. I can only imagine being that the unvaccinated like to gather together, that they become part of a virulent ascension. The sentiment that I get from them is that they tend to feel like it doesn't apply to them, that they're somehow immune to all of it, which quite frankly is bullshit. There's no easy way to deal with it either and no easy answer.

At the risk of sounding harsh, maybe what needs to happen is strict enforcement of vaccine passports (and yeah, I know how unpopular they've been since they were introduced, but come on...) along with mandatory vaccinations and fines for anyone that doesn't comply. Is this too harsh? Maybe it's something that needs to happen in order to for progress to happen. But then again, I'm sure they would then cry about it being political.

Well some of the EU states are making vaccines mandatory, Greece announced they would fine over 60's 100 euro for every month they go unvaccinated.

I still don't really agree with mandatory vaccines for the general population, but i do understand why they might be in certain jobs, i.e. working in the care industry etc,

I know i have said it before but i don't think the EU would have the issue with the level of vaccinations had their leaders not tried to score political points by being so public about the dangers of taking them (particularly the AZ one), which I believe was just an attempt at saving face because their backed vaccine (the sanofi one) failed to come to fruition.

Vaccine passports, im not sure about, in the UK theatres and concert venues have them as mandatory (industry driven not government) but having been to two armed with the relevant paper work i can say they they aren't policing it at all well.

Yeah, I think it should only be as a last resort. At least the thing I'm hearing now is that many that are unvaccinated are now saying they plan on getting it due to the omicron variant.

As for the vaccine passports, I guess it depends on where. In my Canadian Province of Ontario, they enforce it heavily. I think establishments can be fined if they don't ask for the passport.

Distance alone (no masks) even at 3 m creates an infection risk of up to 90% after a few min.
With surgical mask and unmasked infected speaker 1.5 m away, risk reaches 90% after 30 min.
With FFP2 mask (similar to (K)N95), risk stays at 20% even after 1 h.
When both wear surgical masks, risk remains below 30% after 1 h.
When both wear fitting FFP2 masks, the risk is 0.4% after 1 h, or 0.1% after 20 min.
Improper fit around the nose increases it to 4%. A well fitting surgical mask increases the risk to 10%.

Tight-fitting FFP2 masks protect 75x better than fitting surgical masks.

What is the world coming to when a mother and her children get harassed by protesters on the way to getting them vaccinated?

"We had an afternoon appointment. We pulled up to One Kids Place and there were about 10 protesters, and I use that term loosely, outside. They verbally assaulted us as we drove in; swearing and screaming," she said.

Blaszczyk says it was tough enough to convince her seven-year-old to get a needle, without having to deal with angry protesters on top of it. She says it did not get any better when they left.

"As we pulled out they screamed at me that I was murdering my child and I was committing genocide, all with my seven and four-year-old in the car," she said.

At the time, Blaszczyk says there was no police presence at this protest, but she did find out from a friend that the police did respond later that afternoon.

It strikes me that while we allow protesters their 'choice', they are so intolerant to the other viewpoint that they get verbally abusive to a woman's choice to get their kids vaccinated. Unbelievable. So much of a double-standard.

Social media, FaceFucked™, Q-Anon "rat"-holes and generally a bunch of trolls and möröns.

The John Birch Society, the Nazis and Stalinists have never gone away. They just burrow and sleep waiting for the right time to reemerge.

Update on my cousin: Apparently he's doing fine. What they don't really explain too well with the breakthrough cases is that when someone is doubly-vaccinated, the effect is more akin to a bad flu or cold, but that they'll recover quickly. That was the case with my Cousin. He felt very tired for the first few days, but he's bounced back and has no apparent side-effects.

So glad to hear it was a relatively good outcome, Owain ! :techman: Hugs to your cousin !

On the "How crazy could they possibly get ?" front, apparently the newest Covid Craze for the anti-facts & science folks is eating dirt...

Dirt.

But not just any dirt ! Special dirt ! As in a hundred and ten dollars for five ounces of dirt.

From a Canadian peat bog that just happens to be located next to a landfill, and just happens to have alarmingly high level of both arsenic and lead.

People are feeding this to their children. Bathing them in it. Smearing it on their skin.

We're probably about a month away from them starting to drill holes in each other's skulls to let the demons out.

More power to 'em...
