News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

Apparently the Chinese government has officially (although also "tentatively", whatever that means in this situation) named the new illness New Coronavirus Pneumonia, but it will be referred to as Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia, or NCP, in English.

I expected the eventual name to use the "Respiratory Syndrome" / _RS structure from SARS and MERS, but I guess not.
 
The current death toil of 813 has surpassed the 774 deaths of the SARS pandemic.

May they rest in peace.

I would like to say that, based on reports, this virus is not as deadly as SARS as it's fatality rate was around 2% whereas SARS's fatality rate was nearly 10%. But this virus spreads faster and is more infectious.
 
The deaths from this virus has crossed the thousand mark. The good news is that several thousands have recovered from this sickness.

Tha bad news is that the death toll amount each day is incremental so more die than the previous day and out of roughly 5,000 completed cases that 1,000 have died and 4,000 been cleared/recovered which puts the mortality rate near 20%.

It is still early and elderly/already poor health would likely die faster in the disease period, but even if it dropped to 10% thats 4,000 deaths from just currently infected.

Other bad news is in HK they are investigating how a person on the 1st floor became infected by a resident quarantined on the 12th floor. Possible vent contamination with virus droplets mixed with condensation.
 
Yep, and most of the "New" cases in Japan is technically.. not in Japan.. its on that cruise ship!
The thing with this one is that its infectious Before any symtoms surface.. so.. I'm fine I can go out and do my buisiness.. but I'm now Typhoid Mary...
 
The Corona Virus has a new name, COVID-19.

The "CO" stands for "corona", "VI" for "virus" and "D" for "disease", while "19" was for the year, as the outbreak was first identified on December 31, 2019.

San Diego lab discovers COVID-19 vaccine in 3 hours.
Currently in animal testing.

I know a number of other places are working on vaccines as well. The University of Pittsburgh is set to receive samples of the virus in order to work on their own.

Wash your hands, punch an anti-vaxxer in the face, and remind people that yes, it IS still sometimes necessary to have animal testing be around for just this sort of thing.

I just saw that they are having a big Sumo wrestling match in Japan and they are not allowing any spectators!
Because of the Corona virus.
I do a little competitive fencing and I just noticed that a tournament that I really wanted to go to has like virtually nobody signed up to compete.
I'm not sure how it is where everyone else is but it seems crazy to me.
Isn't the flu, you know, regular influenza that goes all over the world every year and has already killed something like 20,000 in the USA this year, isn't this worse than corona that has killed like 7 in the USA, for comparison?
Someone told me the stores were out of toilet paper too! Yikes!
But I did go into a Walmart and the cleaning supply shelf was almost empty.
So are ther others out there noticing strange stuff of is it only certain places?
 
Nakita Akita, it seems to be only in certain areas. Over here, we have 1112 infected people. The first death of a German occured yesterday (but in Egypt). IN some German regions people buy canned food and desinfectants. In my own area it's rather quiet. We have only 2 mild cases so far and a few schools and Kindergartens are closed. As there's currently a rather mean streak of a common cold virus, people tend to react hysterical once they sneeze, and the hysteria has also spread to a few GPs. On the whole, the situation here in the rural areas is rather calm, though. The authorities asked for events with more than 1000 participants to be cancelled or postponed and some smaller ones have been shifted as well.

At my office, one colleague returned from a vacation in a high-risk country today and was promptly ordered to work from home for the next 2 weeks. Everyone jopes she is ifected since she's been in the staff manager's oficce and we'd love him to be off the premises for a few weeks :whistle:

In the office where I work they put a take out with spray bottles of whatever cleaner whatever, and these towels like people use to polish wax on their cars. :guffaw:
And, are we supposed to throw the
"" infected"" towels in a trash can someplace in the building?:ack:

I'm just mad about my fencing competition.:mad:
I have a friend who competes nationally and internationally, I feel bad for her.
 
In Singapore, many concerts, shows and sport events have been canceled or postponed.


In China, the death rate is going down but now it seems that both Italy and Iran are the new epicenters of this virus.
 
Canada reported its first COVID-19 death today. He was in his 80s, and was a resident of a North Vancouver care home. They are now testing all the residents, and so far two more have been confirmed to have the virus. Two workers at the home have also tested positive for the virus (one of these had been announced earlier).
