News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

while I have no issue with people choosing not to be vaccinated I hope they have had their pay docked because they have not taken every step possible to ensure they are available for work

Yeah, the thing about antivaxxers is that they tend to want the same benefits as the vaccinated. They really need to be taken to account. They're only making it more difficult for others to continue their work.

The head of the Advisory Table also insisted that the stories going around indicating that Omicron causes a milder illness is a "myth" that needs to be addressed, due to the fact that the demographic data in Ontario is significantly different than that of South Africa, and at this point we really don't know how it's going to behave in our population.

Yeah, unfortunately got taken in by that myth. Another thing to consider that I've read recently is that South-Africa is one of the countries with some of the highest hesitancy rates which became a perfect storm for Omicron.

Major news from the Ontario government today: in order to combat the onslaught of Omicron, the government is moving up the date when anyone over 18 can get their third dose from Tuesday, January 4 to Monday, December 20. In addition, they are cutting the minimum time between the second and third dose from 6 months to 3 months.

That means I'll be eligible for another shot in just five days. Although I imagine the bookings are already through the roof. I'll have to go see what's still available.

This is just bat shit crazy.

AmazonSmile donated more than $40,000 to anti-vaccine groups in 2020
Donations through the online retailer’s charitable program come as it faces criticism for its role in health misinformation

That's probably because just about any organization can become affiliated with Amazon and make money on purchases. It doesn't sound like Amazon screens for anything that could be seen as problematic.

As for the booster shot, I think it becomes available for me in January.

The old rules are out the window. As long as you are 18 or older, and you had your second dose no later than September 27, then you're good to get your booster as early as Monday.

Of course, since they just announced it yesterday, when I checked last night, the booking sites hadn't been updated for the new rules yet. Hopefully that will be done quickly. (I haven't checked for today, yet.)

Just watched a clip on TV about the new mask/vaccine mandates in Australia, and the Health Minister having the press conference was interrupted by a Huntsman spider.

Being Australia, it was gigantic, of course - just like everything else there that wants to eat your face !

She kept her composure, amazingly - this is an actual mask featuring the Huntsman, real size... :wtf:

I suspect that particular Huntsman had an ulterior motive in interrupting the Health Minister.

Well, thanks to Omicron I'm 85% sure my plans for this year's holidays are now gone and I'll be spending my third Christmas in a row alone.

I have a friend who opened a cafe during the pandemic (didn't have a choice it had been in the works for years) and since she opened it during and not before got no government support during previous capacity cuts/lockdowns. I'm worried for her and her family. They've done a lot for me. Including surprising me today with a sign on her business saying happy birthday to me today and lunch and dessert.

Other birthday plans with other friends (restaurant and movie) are also gone as the theater halted all sales and pulled screenings from the website, only allowing people who pre-booked last week to attend to meet the capacity requirements.

Well, at least I have a shit ton of fancy, expensive local cheeses, pies, and craft beer that were going to be Christmas gifts if I get hungry

My Family and I already knew we wouldn't be going anywhere more than a month ago when the cases were the highest in this region of all of Ontario. We looked at the cases per region, and with the news of the Omicron variant, it all but made the decision for us. Second Christmas in a row without seeing my niece and nephew, but it is what it is. We just aren't willing the roll the dice.

Virtual hugs to anyone who will be alone - and doesn't want to be - over the holidays...

If the unmasked and un-socially-distanced people had simply done what was asked of them more than a year and a half ago this wouldn't still be happening !

That goes for the un-vaxxed and un-boosted now, too.

It didn't have to be like this, but here we are.

I'll be with my family here for Christmas - all vaxxed, boosted, and properly quarantined - but we all made sacrifices in order to do so, not going anywhere or seeing anyone for months and months...

Hell, I moved here to the middle of nowhere - it's like Little Quarantine in the Big Woods - and I have no plans to go back to "Civilization" until this is all over.

Yep, and I gotta say, "I'll be Home for Christmas" will end up having a whole new meaning when all of this is over. :D

Direct sequel to Big Trouble in Little China? :D

*sigh* Yeah, I know what you mean. We've sacrificed so much, and I hope in the end some off the antivaxxers will end up appreciating what we've done one day. But what do they know.

We also really need to do a better job of getting vaccines out to the whole world, not just the wealthy nations.

We really do, but also a part of it is that there's so much hesitancy all over the world and some of those vaccines end up expiring and wasted instead of ending up in arms. I think there also needs to be a better effort at educating in a way that would remove the stigma.

I really doubt they'll be appreciative, but if this ends - finally ends - I won't care ! Just as long as it's over.

After postponing our wedding (twice !) my Guy and I just gave up on having the big party - where you do the Electric Slide with my 98 year-old Aunt Georgina - until we can do so safely, and if that means another year or two or three then so be it...

If folks had just quarantined, masked, and socially-distanced as a rule - rather than the exception - way back in, say, the summer of 2020, we would have had a handle on this by now :brickwall:

It's sad to say, but there are a lot of people that simply don't get the big picture. It's because of selfishness where we are now. Too much instant gratification, and we pay the price.

The only live event I've attended recently was last year. It was a specially planned drive-in concert. Everyone in their vehicles watching performers on stage, tuned to a specific radio frequency for the audio, and it was magical. Instead of claps, it was car honks, and it was epic. Wish more would be done like this. Yet I haven't heard much of anything since. I really think it's something that should be embraced everywhere, rather than taking chances at crowded events.

Oh and congrats to you and your guy. Looks like he found someone special :)

I think you are right, a lot of common sense could have made things different.

It makes me think of a close friend. In the UK we had to 'sign' in or scan a QR code on the NHS App when visiting a restaurant or pub. I always did, but he always just flashed his phone at the QR code, but never scanned it. His reason? He wasn't going to self isolate unless he actually had covid.

Im sure he wasnt on his own in that approach and could easily have led to spreading the virus through a selfish approach.

It the same friend who had lockdown parties (i didnt go), and now complains that there are restrictions.

What can you do?

One of my mates is like that (and tended to take a non smart-phone out too) for that reason. However, anytime he touches anything, out comes the hand sanitizer while it's going on

I had issues with a couple of pubs (No network signal for my phone) so we tended to skip the ones where no-one had signal.

And that's that, my Christmas and NY are officially cancelled. At least I have $110 of cheese and another $110 of savoury and sweet pies in my tiny apartment fridge/freezer to tide me over. 3rd in a row of both alone, and the one previous to that was... Not good.
