News Coronavirus Pandemic Information and Support Group

(ETA:) Oops, trhought this was in TNG, will spoiler code for

If you don't need to spoiler code for the F-word in the TNG forum, you certainly don't need to do so here!

(In seriousness, board policy is there are no restrictions on the word anywhere on the board, as long as it is not in thread titles or avatar images.)

I spoke to my mom this morning and she told me that the local Wal-Mart in Wenatchee is now closed for the foreseeable future because management wasn't enforcing the statewide 'wear a mask' rule for employees and shoppers and now 17 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed amongst the employees.

My brother has had to isolate himself from his family for the next two weeks because one of his co-workers refused to wear a mask and came down with COVID-19 and potentially infected the entire construction crew and my sister-in-law and niece both have asthma so they're particularly vulnerable.

People should lose their jobs because of this.

Yesterday our district received 9 new cases in one day, which is the largest daily increase for us, putting us up to 79 cases, with 12 active cases, those including the previous 3 cases. It's disappointing, but then, they're all travel-related, and most of them under 30, presumably travelling to a hotspot. I guess it's comforting to know that we aren't a source of infection. But it serves as a wakeup call that we're not out of the woods, that we still need to remain vigilant.

Our district appears to be spiking. 10 New cases today, along with the previous 12 cases, bringing the active total to 22, which is very high for us. Twenty-two cases in a week and a half is quite high for us, and in fact it's higher than it's been since even just a few months ago . What's concerning is that those 10 cases seem to be community transmissions, at least 8 of them have no known exposures. I read that as people letting their guard down due to summer. Everyone wants to be out and about, especially when we've had a long cold winter. It's frustrating. *sigh*

So Ontario has announced our school reopening plan for September.
  • Elementary schools (K to 8) will be back full days five days per week, with no changes in class sizes.
  • Secondary schools (9 to 12) on a list of 24 designated school boards (which includes both the public and Catholic boards for my area) will have their students attend alternate days, or with modified schedules that would give them at least 50% in-class time. Class sizes will be limited to around 15 students.
  • For the remaining school boards not on the list of 24, the secondary schools will be back full days with full attendance.
  • Non-medical masks will be required for students in grades 4 through 12.
  • Although not required, non-medical masks will be "encouraged" for students in kindergarten through grade 3.
  • Medical-grade masks will be required (and provided) for teachers and other school staff.
  • Schools will adopt other procedures, such as distancing, cohorting, increased hygiene, and staggered lunches/recesses.
  • Parents have the choice as to whether they send their children back to school, or continue with remote learning. Remote learning will now be delivered at the board level.
It will be interesting to see how the public responds. There has been a lot of dialogue over the past few weeks from both the "children should be back in the classroom" and the "it's not safe to return yet" camps.

Yeah, I'm of the opinion that it's still too soon. Openings need to be scattered more, especially ones featuring mandatory groups such as school. With our district currently spiking, I'm kind of wary.

Tic-Tac-Toe? w/ dry erasers on the window and phone, but you will have to work things in reverse which will give your Mom a slight advantage.

I sympathize, my Mom is 86 and I am lucky enough to still have her w/ me in the house.

Best wishes,

G
I found out today that I can visit with her sitting outside the place she is at. As long as we both wear a mask and are 6 ft. apart. I can't wait to visit with for real in person!!

Well, it looks like my area is back on a mini lockdown.

It doesn't particularly bother me, but as designated driver, it's winding some of my mates up more:(

I have a friend whose brother caught COVID-19, yet she's still on her anti-mask crusade.

Maybe this is how the world ends. It won't be a virus or natural disaster or alien invasion; it'll be about how poorly humans respond to it.
