Continuing to Discover Doctor Who

And I can't wait to see your reactions to Arc of Infinity. I think the latter is far, far worse, though I'm sorta alone in that assessment.
Not entirely alone- I think "Time-Flight" is pretty dull and silly, but it in no way approaches the tragic awfulness of "Arc of Infinity." Not even the joy-in-hindsight of Colin Baker's role can salvage that mess.

You'll have to wait I'm afraid - I've got to go back and watch the rest of the season that ended with Time-Shite first.

And I CANNOT stand The Idiot's Lantern.

Arc of Infinity is marginally less bad than Time Flight. At least there are some nice shots of Amsterdam.

And I loved The Idiot's Lantern!

I know an episode (Time Flight) sucks when the only thing I remember from watching it years ago is 'Damn, are Concorde tires really that small?'

Only reason I might ever pick this up is for the commentary. I hear the actors realize it's crap and treat it acordingly. :)

That's the only thing I'm looking forward to when I eventually buy it on DVD. That must be a riot to listen to.

Well, unfortunately, it looks like I won't be able to see the last two stories of "The Key To Time". I'll probably have to wait until the special edition box set comes out in North America. :(

I thought that would be out by now.

Anyway, you've reached the peak of that season already, it's all pretty much downhill now from there. I just finished watching it recently myself and am reminded once more of how incredibly beautiful Mary Tamm was in her day (though I must say, seeing her in the dvd special features also highlighted how little the cosmetic surgery has worked for her over the years). She'll always be my favourite Romana.

Oh and I realise Power of Kroll isn't regarded too well by most fans, but I've always rather enjoyed it. SFX-wise, apart from the dead flat horizon, I really think the Kroll beast looks awesome for it's day, though I know most people think it looks pretty silly. To each their own I suppose.

I know anything would have been great after Time-Shite, but Four to Doomsday was bloody brilliant! Is it really underrated like I read somewhere? Because that seems like madness to me. The space-walk was bizarre but what a brilliant solution to the problem of having the rope untied :D Now I see where John Smith got his cricket ball skills from...

It's taken me the last ten minutes to remember Ten using a cricket ball, but oh yes indeed. No second chances...

Kinda is next.. isn't that one frowned upon by a lot of people?

Kinda starts off very strongly and but then slowly tapers off by the end. Along with Four to Doomsday and The Visitation, Kinda is one of The Fifth Doctor serials that I thought had good premises and good starts, but terrible follow through.

Technically speaking, "The Key To Time" is. But not the new one they released recently in the UK. Which means I'm certainly not shelling out money for the old ones.

Anyway, I think I'm going to take a little break from Doctor Who (famous last words; for all I know it'll be another year!), then come back to rediscover it again.

By the end of part 2 of Kinda, I can call it only one thing, and that's bizarre. I like it. All those Tegans

Oddly enough, I've just watched half of Four to Doomsday on a review disc tonight, and the Davison&companion team (who're usually viciously unpleasant about any failings) really like it. Much to their surprise, they make clear, but they're very impressed by the sets, lighting, and in particular that spacewalk sequence.
Script's still a bit of a sleeping pill though :-)

Kinda is one of the greats (aside from That Snake). It's common to say that it's great, but too complex for kids (even the director apparently asked why he was being asked to make a Play for Today on a Doctor Who budget for a Doctor Who slot), but it first went out when I was 14 and I thought it was one of the best of the season even then.
Though it did come bottom of the DWm season poll that year, ISTR. (yes, Time-Flight beat it...)

It also has quite a few "Adric needs a smack 'round the head for being a twat" scenes ("Really? Never!" I hear you cry).

It's nice to scowl at a fictional character from time to time.

What! What! What! Are you saying a disc of a forthcoming release? You mean FTD is coming out soon? Did I miss this?

Must check OG now...I'll get me coat.

Edit: Well, I'll be 15 September. I really should keep up with the DVD forum there.

So, can you tell us any more about this release?
