Hmm, maybe they cast her with an eye toward the potential spinoff series in which she'd presumably be a recurring player. After all, cats are very flexible, so it makes sense to cast a contortionist as the cat's human form.

Yeah, you've got it pretty much exactly right.
I've never heard that he had it set up at the beach. My understanding was that Shatner slept in the camper when he was touring the country in traveling stage productions. The camper was in the back of his pickup truck and he would set it up in the parking lot of the theatres where he was performing. He did it to cut corners on his budget since the amount of his alimony was determined when he was still the star of Star Trek. As you might imagine, Shatner's income went down quite a bit without that regular job and he had to struggle for a few years there.
Shatner tells a great story in his Star Trek Movie Memories book about how, on the night of the moon landing in 1969, a little boy thought his camper was a spaceship since it looked so much like the Apollo 11 capsule. Shatner gave the kid a tour of his "spaceship," saying that the shower was his transporter unit and making up other stuff on the fly.

I don't know about that. Now I listened the podcast and it was just one-time job without any audition. I suppose that if they had intended to make her a recurring player, the process would have been more thorough. But I have to add that I have no idea what would be her role in an hypothetical series. Perhaps she would have to appear just for few seconds every episode being mute and, er, feline?

I thought that too, but she never had had any acting experience before that episode (she confirmed that in podcast). She was just an unaccredited extra and they didn't even check if she could speak a line. From that to a recurring player in a tv show perhaps is a little too much of a leap?

That's true. It's just that it's quite a coincidence that they randomly happened to cast an extra who had a skill that would've been perfect for the ongoing series. I'm not suggesting she was formally signed for the spinoff or anything -- just thinking that maybe it was in the back of someone's mind as a possibility when they decided to go with her for the part. At least, if they had gone to series, they probably would've at least auditioned her for the recurring part, so maybe somebody was informally, unofficially thinking ahead. Or maybe it was just a lucky happenstance. Black cats are good luck, after all.

If Roddenberry, or any of those other middle aged Hollywood producers tried any of her moves with her, they'd be headed to the hospital, fast.

I've got a Shatner-camper story. It's a friend's story actually. My friend was a young security guard at a local mall where Shatner was performing in the mall theater. After work, my friend's car wouldn't start, so there he was with the hood up and a flashlight (he was a pretty good mechanic, actually), when Shatner, driving by in his camper, stopped and asked if my friend needed any help. Without thinking, he said no thanks I've got it. Shat said okay, have a nice night. It was only when Shat was pulling away that my friend realized it was Capt Kirk who was offering a hand. So whatever else we've heard about him over the years, we've figured he was a nice guy based on that.
I think MB22 meant if those men tried to replicate the poses she could perform, they would likely dislocate joints and/or their backs and thus need medical attention.
