Conan's STAR TREK

Person dressing up in a Star Trek costume=Military person...? Gotta heartily disagree.:vulcan:

More like a person dressing up in a sports Jersey.

You'd have a point if said person wore the jersey, the leggings, the pads, the cleats and the helmet, in which case I'd say the person wearing the sports clothing to the grocery store was equally retarded. Wearing a sports jersey would be like wearing a DS9 t-shirt, no one would give it second glance.

Sorry, walking around in your daily life with a full uniform waving your fake tricorder and phaser around is not the same as wearing a football jersey.

I'd also comment that the people who attend Trek Conventions in costume are no different than people who paint their bodies and dress in uniforms for sporting events, they are equally geeky in their own way and in no way indicate deviant behaviour.

It espouses to explore the life of trek fans, but really amps up the 'whacko' contingent just for sales..that is bad IMO..

Rob

No, it really doesn't. It explores the life of extreme Trek fans. I don't think the general public who saw Trekkies (the few that did) believes that everyone who watches Star Trek is like that, they are obviously not the norm.

How much fun would it be to see a movie about John Smith who has a collection of TNG DVDs and occasionally watches TOS reruns and otherwise has no connection to Star Trek?

Well, Joe Q smith does see them. My friends watched it with me and laughed at the goobs showcased. Oh, they try to sprinkle in less obvious fans, but dont kid yourself; it showcases the way out fans, and that is not, I HOPE AT LEAST, the majority of fans..

So no..I disagree with you. I would rather see a TREKKIES that showcased fans who are a bit more, well, normal; and then sprinkle in the way-out fans here and there.

Rob

I like Conan. But he needs to be less 'overtly' liberal as he appears to be more and more; and I am an OBAMA supporter! I didn't like when Leno started going political, and I dont watch Letterman anymore because of it.

One of the things I always liked about Jay Leno was that his political humor zinged both side equal.

Conan is afraid of the current president.

Stopped watching Letterman after he did the Sarah Palins' 14 year old daughter should be raped "joke."

Yep. Leno, and Carson before him, were even handed even though both leaned left. Letterman is pathetic, i can't stand him anymore. I use to love the guy, but eeeek, no longer.

I could like Conan more, but his obvious brown nosing of Obama is sickening. In fact the total media worship of Obama, WHO I VOTED FOR, worries me. Many of the reasons I voted for Obama are falling by the wayside; he needs to do what we sent him there to do; and so far he isn't.

But...as for conan? He just needs to scale it back a little..

Rob

The problem is, you can't really make fun of Obama himself. He doesn't really have the personal quirks that previous presidents had, like Dubya's lack of intelligence, Clinton's horniness, Ford's clumsiness, Carter's timidness, etc. etc. So how do you get around that? By making fun of his policies (like the Daily Show) or by picking on his staff (like SNL).

But Conan's never been that mean-spirited to begin with, either. He can get gross and over the top, but never really vicious. He's probably the only late night host in recent memory to *not* have some sort of well-publicized feud.

Yeah, that's right, Fallon's got a feud with his own audience :)

Truth be told, that would probably be either a boring documentary, or something we've seen a bunch of times already. The History Channel's recent Trek documentaries were pretty even-handed, I think. These docs would cover space exploration, pop culture proliferation, career inspiration, etc. etc.

The big Christie's auction showcased die-hard fans and also "normal" admirers, both groups of which spent money at the auction, but more importantly it showed how the casts from all the shows revered these fans and validated their passions.

And then, the simple answer is: we don't need a documentary of "normal" Trek fans; everybody's a Trekkie! :)

Maybe someone should make a documentary about this list: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trekkie#Notable_Individual_Trekkies.2FTrekkers.2FTrek_Fans

You have everyone from A-list actors to musicians to politicians to pro wrestlers who would beat you down if you ever made fun of them for being a Trekkie.

Voted for Bob Barr myself. My hands are clean.

Conan's jokes at the expense of trekkies doesn't bother me, some of us are nerds, wear glasses, live in basements, virgins ( until I get to them ), I'll usual find I can laugh along.

Most late night humor is a hit on someone.

Conan, as a trekkie himself, gets a pass from me on the trek jokes (and I do laugh at most of them) simply because he is one of us.

I mean, we don't knock other posters on here for cracking jokes about other fans... and some of them need to be joked about, like the aforementioned Whitewater juror.

Maybe some day, Star Trek uniforms will becoming mainstream clothing, like sports uniforms are today.

But until that day, please leave them for conventions and Halloween.

Star Trek is finally getting back into the public's eyes with the new film, let's not drag it back down into campy cult status.

Okay if I still wear my TNG communicator on the collar of my jacket?

hmmmmmmm....if it is one of the smaller one and looks like typical bling..then yeah. I will give this one more serious thought and hand out might decree later..JUST KIDDING!!!...yeah, its okay. I mean, heck, I still wear my Kermit the frog underwear...

ROb

That wikipedia list is interesting, Cyke. There seems to be a lot more famous Trekkies than I thought.

Why is this never focused on in the media? We always get 'look at this tragic dressed in uniform', and never 'look, freaking current darlings Angelina Jolie and Megan Fox are fans'. Tom Hanks should do a role in the next film, as he's a huge fan. He's considered cool in the mainstream. If he can't 'validate' Trek, no-one can.

Conan's TREK jabs...continue

I love his jabs at TREk fans...his latest?

"Scientist have located the part of the DNA that controls a male teenager's sex drive. They hope by studying it they can lower the sex drive, and thus cause less unwanted pregnancys for girls. I don't know about you, but if I wanted to make sure my teenaged boy remained a virgin? I'd get him a box collection of Star Trek DVDs."

ummmmmmmm...yep!!!

Re: Conan's TREK jabs...continue

Its a simple gag that relies on stereotypes. Nearly all late night comedian jokes do this, and, like this one, are usually pretty funny.

Ummm...really?? It got the biggest laugh of the night; heck even I laughed. Why do you think BIG BANG theory is the hit it is? Its funny!!!

Like it or not, that image is out there of TREK fans...and so what? Even if it is true? Its part of our culture and it is funny.

Re: Conan's TREK jabs...continue

I love the star wars ones he used to do, where he touches the top of his nose (to fix his glasses), then swings an imaginary lightsaber while speaking in a nerdy voice

He uses that same thing for the Harry Potter fans too...it is funny. And he is a fan, so I take that into account as well. When TREKXI came out, he was very cool with those who came on his show to PR it...

Uh...yeah. That was my point...

Re: Conan's TREK jabs...continue

Heck, his jokes are less harmful than all the Trekkies movies for the image of Trek fans.
