Computer programming

Seriously? that's the take away you take from what I said, I scrimped and saved and owe a shit tonne of money to HMG because I decided to go back to uni and get a degree in a field I wanted to learn and grow and felt genuine passion for.

You need to start reading what people say, not assuming what they're saying and not be so closed and single minded on things.

Yes you could learn a Programming Language or two or three, with your attitude on display, I doubt you actually will though.
I can’t afford to study postgraduate. I would a lot of money in the bank to study postgraduate, which I don’t have.

I’d like to study but there are no means to for people on modest incomes in the UK, particularly with existing qualifications.

I don't care.

I'm done trying to help you and pandering to you. You completely misrepresented what I said earlier and have done that multiple times in this thread to me and others.

I personally think @Avro Arrow should close this thread given:

I was asking about programming,

And that has been answered.

An observation, and a suggestion ...

Every suggestion that somebody makes, you have a reason why it won't work. I understand; I feel that way myself sometimes. When I do feel that way, I find it's helpful to step back and try to unpack the reasons.

One possibility is that you feel backed into a corner ... this career counselor, who frankly doesn't know what they're talking about, made you feel like you had to become a computer programmer, and you don't really want to. In which case ... fuck 'em. @Spot's Meow has some really good advice a few posts up. Asperger Syndrome is not your destiny, and you don't have to be a programmer because some career counselor fell back on a lazy stereotype.

Another is that you're just in a bad place right now, and that's contributing to a defeatist mindset. It sounds like having a diagnosis of AS is something very new that you're not at all comfortable with, nor happy with. Counseling in the psychological sense may be very useful in dealing with this. (Not an attack -- I've been in therapy myself and I think that there are very few people who couldn't benefit from it at some point in their lives.)

The suggestion ... take a step back, examine if programming is something you're really interested in or just feeling pressured into, and then enlist a therapist (which I think NHS covers, though as an American I'm just going off of cursory googling) to help you figure out a roadmap for where to go next.

A career counselor who fell back on a trope and likely hasn't spent more than an hour or two with you should not be deciding your destiny.

Since you've shot down pretty much every single suggestion here, I would suggest you absolutely, 100% don't want to go into programming.

So don't.

You’re actively bullying me by taunting me about postgraduate education which I can’t even dream of affording.

Galactic Alignment, no one has bullied you, or talked about their educational background in a bragging or taunting way or anything other than a matter-of-fact manner to give you an idea of what is generally needed in the programming field. Nor are they wealthy elites looking down on you. People have been offering you extensive advice in good faith for free on their own time just to be helpful to a complete stranger on the forum where we have shared interests. Sometimes they have had to use blunt talk to try and motivate you to be proactive and search for things yourself, but that's part of what being a friend to someone means. It's not just being a "Yes Man" and telling them what they want to hear without giving them straightforward advice.

You have requested that the mods delete this thread because you are having a bad time in it. I am sorry that you feel that way, but after reviewing the thread everyone has been kind and helpful and advising you in good faith from what I have seen, so I don't share that assessment. It is not board policy to delete threads unless they are spam or contain objectionable content of some sort, and this does not. Quite the opposite in fact, because even if it does not ultimately help you, and I hope it does if you give it a second chance, this thread could be helpful to others seeking a career in programming. There's also no significant personally identifying information about you in the thread that I saw (I can delete that if there was anything I missed).

So I'm not going to delete this thread, but I will (sadly) close it at your request. I know it's difficult, but in the future please try and be mindful that when you are asking for advice on the internet the answers may not always be satisfactory to you (unintentionally or not), but as the person asking for help, it is incumbent on you to be able to take those comments in a friendly and open-minded manner.
