I mostly just brought this up because I wanted to share that quote. The insuing discussion has been funny and interesting though.
To me, it's just rude for Lucas to change things over the years when it suits him (never without the option to just stick with what was established), all the while having his company's official policy be that there is one unified continuity. Why make that claim and then not follow it? Why lie to people when some of them are very attached to the claim you've been making?
It would be better if Star Wars just went with the Star Trek continuity paradigm. Some things could form a mainline continuity, other things could stand on their own, older stuff could just not fit at all but still be good stories.
