Commentary on the current state of Star Wars continuity(some spoilers)

Re: Commentary on the current state of Star Wars continuity(some spoil

I mostly just brought this up because I wanted to share that quote. The insuing discussion has been funny and interesting though.

To me, it's just rude for Lucas to change things over the years when it suits him (never without the option to just stick with what was established), all the while having his company's official policy be that there is one unified continuity. Why make that claim and then not follow it? Why lie to people when some of them are very attached to the claim you've been making?

It would be better if Star Wars just went with the Star Trek continuity paradigm. Some things could form a mainline continuity, other things could stand on their own, older stuff could just not fit at all but still be good stories.

Fascinating! I'd never looked at it that way, but that makes a lot of sense. Congrats; you've just made the Star Wars Prequel Rejection Society's blog! :p
Wait, are you people making a "everything that sucks about the prequels" list on that blog or something?

Oh God, what a great way to make use of your time! :guffaw:

Re: Commentary on the current state of Star Wars continuity(some spoil

So in a way, these books could have possibly been responsible for the prequels (As well as the SEs) being made in the first place...
There was abundant financial motive to make more Star Wars movies just because of the renowned brand name and promise of action! and kickass visuals! that guaranteed butts in seats even after TPM gave us ample warning that everything else (besides the music) would suck. I doubt the books ever had any impact at all. Books don't generally have that level of financial impact when compared with Star Wars box office revenue level numbers.

The toys and video games are probably a serious financial factor but with them, it flows the other way: the movies are PR for selling toys and video games, and the cost of the movies could partly be justified that way. My bet is that books are in the same category as toys and video games: products that benefit from the PR boost of movies, not source material for movies.
You rarely, if ever, name a war after the side you were fighting on as opposed to the side you were fighting against or the most notable location thereof.
Good point but I doubt Lucas was putting that much thought into it. I used to think the Clone Wars were fought over the clones just because that would make a good story, but you don't see wars being named after the cause of the conflict all that much either. I didn't assume that clones were fighting on either side.

Lord, no; Chefelf and RLM have done that to perfection. The Society's blog will only list an occasional reason for why the PT should simply be ignored. :techman:

Re: Commentary on the current state of Star Wars continuity(some spoil

It would be better if Star Wars just went with the Star Trek continuity paradigm.

So you want Star Wars EU to move to a unified continuity that is expanded on what appeared on screen?

Some things could form a mainline continuity,
G-Canon.

other things could stand on their own,
C-canon.

older stuff could just not fit at all but still be good stories.
Infinities

Much like how the GFFA is trapped in a neverending cycle of religious war where a tiny minority can hold sway or devastate the "civilised" galaxy, EU fans will forever be complaining that Lucas is in "their" canon messing things up.

PT should simply be ignored. :techman:
If it should be ignored, then what kind of example are you setting by RUNNING A BLOG ABOUT IT? :wtf:

God, I love a good irony! :guffaw:

time is like the ocean always moving always changing .

kinda like the ear worm from wrath of khan right.

Re: Commentary on the current state of Star Wars continuity(some spoil

Did anyone ever "promise" that the Clone Wars would be about "evil" clones or was that a fan wish?
It was implied by not only Obi-Wan's use of it, but the phrase itself. You rarely, if ever, name a war after the side you were fighting on as opposed to the side you were fighting against or the most notable location thereof. What we're actually seeing are the Droid Wars or the Seperatist Wars. At most, it would be the Droid-Clone Wars by including both major combatants.

Or should we rename WWII the American Wars? Hey, Americans fought in it, right?

What about the French and Indian War?

You know that war that is actually between the British and the French?

So, yeah, there's a historical precedence... in our world.

ITT: OP thinks EU matters

I think that's a bit cruel. There's nothing wrong with being concerned about the validity/continuity of past stories being fudged by subsequent developments. I can certainly understand how the OP feels.

It's Lucas' sandbox, other people just get to play in it. If he wants to steal their toys or throw them out entirely that's his right because, again, it's his sandbox.

Exactly.

There is a simple solution, if you don't like Lucas rewriting his universe. Stop watching. Stop reading. There are plenty of other things to do and read and get involved in.

I guess I don't understand so much emotional attachment to a fictional universe after the age of 12. I mean, I get it, it's a hobby, but, it's a fictional universe, things can change and be rewritten, it's fiction. And if you can't deal with that, maybe it's time to move on.

About that good clones / bad clones thing...

Every single poster ad for AOTC that featured the clones had them sided with the bad guys. How about that?

Re: Commentary on the current state of Star Wars continuity(some spoil

^Maybe they learned their lesson on spoiling Darth Maul's two-ended lightsaber, which was in every ad, but set up in the film to be a surprise near the end.

Re: Commentary on the current state of Star Wars continuity(some spoil

^ There's a thin line between that and just hiding the crap. Viz: no "midichlorian" sound bites in any trailer. :p
