Coming in 4K - Star Trek's 1-IV??

Well what do you know? I went and checked on deep discount and even though I ordered it after hours on Saturday they shipped it today Labor Day! So the sets are definitely out there to be had if the company you buy them from is efficient. First time I ordered from deep discount. I got $10 off their $68 price so the whole thing came to $65 and change with tax. If they can get it to me in one piece I will be Mighty impressed by them

Yeah these are going to be late for the most part. I ordered the first hour it was available to pre-order at Amazon and I have the same notice about getting an e-mail sometime. Amazon is not reliable when it comes to new releases.

Disc manufacturing has been behind schedule due to capacity and supply chain issues since the pandemic started, basically. Amazon needs a fair amount of lead time to get new releases out on time and in many cases hasn't been getting it from the home video distribution arms of the major studios (which also distribute many independent labels).

Which is not to defend Amazon too fervently. Their deal terms are not doing any favors to the home video business when it comes to profitability (and, frankly, viability).

I haven't got a 4k player - but I've ordered the set anyway.

This applies to a lot of people. Every time a new 4K turns up on the shelves, I get 4K envy, but still not enough to replace the widescreen I have, because that one has 3D and I still have lots of 3D Blu-Rays yet to watch.

You don't have a 4K player but you do have a 4K TV?
No player or TV, I do have a 4K monitor for work. One day I’ll upgrade.
The issue I have is that I can’t fit a TV bigger than 40inches in the space in my living room. So the difference from 1080p is negligible. Obviously the HDR would be an improvement. Years ago, I made a home cinema in my shed, but with a 1 year old and a 3 year old, I don’t get to watch much in there anymore. But one day I’ll get a 4K projector.

My iTunes versions upgraded. Directors cut of II is still HD though.
Amazon is playing games with the hard copies with them coming on Saturday. Should have arrived yesterday

I had the same issue, wound up cancelling my preorder, ordering again and got same day delivery.

Watched the first one, looks great. Though I've never noticed Kirk loses the tan he has at the start of the film as it goes on before.

I would have done that but I used a Amazon voucher. They can be tricky to get back.
I spoke to Amazon about it and they gave me a £5 voucher.

And Khan done. Great as ever.

Also noticed for the first time that when Kirk returns to the bridge after getting off the Genesis asteroid, some no name non-speaking cadet is in the chair.

Which feels a bit of a dick move to George Takei considering he and Nichelle Nichols basically get nothing in the film as it is and Sulu is surely the ranking officer. They couldn't let him command the ship for even a second of screen time?

Hmmmm maybe I should have pre-ordered the set. Seems like almost every store is already sold out.

I’m leery of ordering DVDs online, I’ve had them arrive broken too many times before. Although CD’s always come in ok.

You don't have a 4K player but you do have a 4K TV?

That's how I did it. Leapfrog back and forth, unless the player's abilities are higher than the set's. I finally got a 4K player and, wow, the differences are huge...

Okay, it is true that going from dual-layer blu-ray to 4K UDH isn't all that bad - the previous release footage looks a tad soft, but still looks reasonably sharp and detailed where it counts the most (compared to upscaled videotape, which is far worse in all aspects...)

But a native 4K UDH disc of the same movie? The new film neg scan at native 4K reveals a lot more detail than I had originally believed, and the accompanying 1080p blu-ray uses the same transfer -- so if nothing else you're still getting a considerable upgrade, with the maximum waiting for when one gets a 4 player.

Not just raw resolution holding image detail, which is amazing enough, the algorithms used for HDR and other aspects simply blew me away. Even tiny set details you would not have seen in previous releases due to lesser resolution, or not in the theater because you're gawking at a 60' screen rather than a condensed 60" one and your eye can't take in all four corners of a 60' screen... that's not a dig, it's actually pretty cool to see, especially when so few examples exist.

Granted, with higher density visuals you'll have to sit a little closer to the TV to really appreciate it all. With lower density visuals (e.g. upscaled videotape), sitting at the same distance will show every bit of compression artifacting so you'll have to sit farther back. Not a big thing... home theater is pretty cool with a 60" screen... Or even with mid-size TVs that, a couple decades ago, were 'theater' (e.g. 40"), as those could be perceived as "drive-in theater but in one's living room and without everyone around you honking their horns or each other's".

Speaking of "UDH", some 4K review sites showed samples of old and new and accidentally reversed them (Star Wars Empire Strikes Back showing 4k as blu-ray and vice-versa... unless they fixed the problems and re-released it, but my disc was just fine. Now if only they'd do the CGI-free versions of the films, or a happy medium between old and new but that's a post for elsewhere...)

But 8K for home video seems rather unlikely for a couple decades, and by then streaming will outperform physical media too...

I have always appreciated the DVD (now Blu-ray) extra copy for any film I’ve purchased that included one. I frequently use film clips in my courses and the colleges where I teach are still often lacking in HDMI connectivity—a DVD copy is excellent backup for me.

At home, I have recently acquired a 4k player for one TV but my home cinema setup remains 1080p (and will for quite a while—the projector works fine), so I have been buying 4k discs and using the Blu-ray for awhile. I am in no rush to see that double format disappear.

I just picked this up at my local Best Buy today. Wow! The image quality is astounding! The level of detail is so crisp, that the characters basically leap off the screen! I have only had time to watch a few scenes, but the Kobayashi Maru Test, The first fight between the Reliant and Enterprise, the self destruct of the Enterprise are all incredibly good looking in 4K. I look forward to watching more and eventually getting TMP DE in 4K Blu ray next year. The only other 4K ST movies I will get are VI and FC.

Well you’ll be getting them all as VI is on part 2 and FC on part 3. :)

Finally got the blu ray and I agree that III looks good. I just wish they would fix that line about the Enterprise being 20 years old. Just dub it to 40. That has always bugged me. :)
