Hmm. She also approved (was a producer) of Andromeda, right? Look how that turned out.

I liked Andromeda. I thought it was pretty good. Not great, and far from perfect, but overall, I thought that Andromeda was good science fiction, and done well.

We'll just pretend those last couple of seasons didn't happen ;)
Agreed. :D

I just saw another episode today, about some metal-eating space-maggot. It was horrible. :D

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

Borgminister, so where does it end? Recast TNG? Recast DS9? Now they've opened the door to make up anything they want. They could turn Spock into a woman in the next movie. I just read Vulcan gets blown up in this movie?? What??? How about bringing in the Borg like they did on Enterprise? That would certainly bring in money and people to the theater.

DOGS AND CATS LIVING TOGETHER! MASS HYSTERIA!

I MEAN, OMG! How can these people go on...creating things out of previous material! I mean...my GOD...Star Trek never copied off of anything or launched itself from similar television shows. JESUS CHRIST WON'T SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!?!!

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

That's silly. Star Trek fans -- whatever is left of them -- aren't numerous enough to make this opening any bigger.
So, let me get this straight, Wolverine's fanbase had nothing to do with it's higher grosses? Then how do you explain it's success?

The returns on sequel films are completely driven by fan loyalty. That's why the Star Wars films rank as high as they do. We'll see what the fans really think when it comes to second week box office returns. Sinks like a stone, watch the budget numbers and the possibility of a second film get smaller and smaller...

See the above responses.

Nemesis. Fans only.

Star Trek. Blew the fuck out of Nemesis at the box office, and it's only been a couple days with limited release.
Reminds me of those commercials where the cable industry exec. just makes stuff up in the board room, and everybody around him just agrees with him for fear of admitting they are all in the wrong.

You're just another graduate of MSU, from where I'm sitting.

Fanbase loyalty drives all sequel movie returns. This is a fact that all industry types understand. Fan response sank the returns for Nemesis, which was not only bad Trek, it was bad Cinema (I've written on this subject before) Fan response doomed Enterprise.

If Star Trek succeeds, it's because it found a fanbase to appeal to. The question is, is it the fanbase for Enterprise, and Berrtrek; or is it Classic Trek fans who simply want to relive those glory days of 1967?

Probably the latter.

How many times have you seen the movie?
Yeah, that's what I thought.

Come back when you know what you're talking about.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

Maybe, but the first week or two is always the most irrational as far as the fanbase goes. Invariably, people cool down and their opinions of the film become much more nuanced. People who once thought the movie was absolutely good with no exception start to see more uneven aspects, and fanatical critics realize some of the merits of the film. I would implore everyone to try and reach back to how they felt about any film they really, really liked at first glance and see if their opinion became a little more sophisticated over time. As someone who is also heavily infested in the Star Wars fanbase, I can tell you for a fact that my first opinion of Episode 1 was much, much more positive than it later became upon subsequent viewings and deeper analysis, as well as where the prequels were going. I ask you to look back upon that time and the fan reactions, which were overwhelmingly positive for a while. Opinions -always- become more nuanced with time and thought.

Hmmmm...I won't see Trek XI till Tuesday. I think The Empire Strikes Back is one of the greatest films ever made--period--and better (at least marginally) than the best of the 10 previous Trek films. But when I saw the loathsome mess that was Episode One, my reaction was, and still is: "Star Trek: Insurrection was way better than this crap!"

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

Just because hardcore fans love it and casual fans flock to the theaters doesn't mean I will blindly follow. I'm posting in this topic to support the TC and that I am completely on his side. Who watches it and how much money it makes has no effect on what I do. There are hardily any good movies out anyways so rebooting just means Hollywood is out of ideas, desperate and trying to go back to good stories that worked back in the day.

I'm not saying you should. I'm saying, quite frankly, that I don't give a fuck that you've decided to boycott the movie in your own little way, beyond the hilarity that you think it somehow matters.

I'm not open to the idea because I don't like it. That's my right. There are literally tons of Trek books I would rather read and all non canon that I am sure I would find more enjoyable than this movie. And what if they decide to recast the crew of TNG? I mean why not after this movie? Let's starting looking for a Jonathan Frakes lookalike right now cause he is too old for Riker.
Yes, it's your right to hate the movie. Yes, it's your right to run around screaming and crying in rage about how much of this film is an injustice. Just don't expect much in the way of agreement beyond a few more diehards who have decided to be stubborn, because no one cares beyond an interesting car wreck.

J.

Of course it matters because this is a topic about fans who aren't really into this movie and praise it as if its the best Trek movie ever, which its not. And my point is where does it stop because they could start making up tons of ridiculous shit and go the way of Enterprise. You don't give a fuck, well than you don't belong in this topic either. There are pages of praise for this movie so go post there. I find it quite funny that you are just a follower and have no opinion of your own.

Oh yea, you probably loved Enterprise right? Hahaha!!

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

I haven't seen it. My brother, on the other hand, called me to give me his review. He said it was slick and standard entertainment with the usual slew of cinematographic gimmicks.

He also said it pretty much had nothing to do with TOS save for the names, that it had none of the intellectualism of the old show nor the character development. He found a lot of it just silly like Spock putting Kirk on a planet instead of the brig and Spock waltzing in and asking to be Kirk's first officer at the end.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

I liked Seasons 3 and 4 of Enterprise. I've been a TOS fan since I was 4, that was 25 years ago.

As for giving a fuck, I sure do, just not about you.
Go play somewhere else, kiddo. Adults are trying to talk.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

I don't understand how long time fans can view this latest movie and NOT be insulted. Seriously. Because they had a cameo of a tribble, we're expected to swoon? There wasn't even a hint of moral understory. Especially after all the hype, I was completely depressed after seeing it.

I posted a review of my own on my blog: http://thirdcathode.blogspot.com/2009/05/movie-review-star-trek-2009.html

Since nearly everyone else seems to have loved the movie, I would like to hear from fans who had negative reactions as I did - why did no one else find the film insulting?

The only thing insulting is that you presume to tell other people why this film was so terrible AND make them want to change their minds about. Its insulting to think we don't know what we're doing. Its also insulting to think any of the other Trek films are better than this one, they're not. Some of them are literally awful. Some of their "moral understories" were rather pathetic or badly executed. ST 2009 can be moral without preaching to us. Contrary to your reaction, all I saw was awe, happiness and excitement from the audiences.

You've got to remember that Star Trek is going back to before 1966 when TOS was new to tell how this crew came about. TOS is more ingrained in the public consciousness than any other Trek incarnation; one might say it is the "most popular".

The average person knows Kirk and Spock, however peripherally (oh that captain, oh the guy with the pointy ears), and so there is a built-in (if sometimes pseudo) familiarity among the general public.

Abrams did the best possible job he could in fusing the moderate fan base with the general public to revive a moribund franchise.

The trick was catching interest; the next movie should go further toward incorporating the lore of the old series. To ask tougher questions, hopefully without ever getting pedantic.

And no more whales, please. :p

You like Enterprise at all????? WOW!! Nuff said!!! I don't even need to say anymore.:lol:

Your bitter sorrow is like delicious Cadbury easter eggs. Creamy on the inside, chocolate on the outside. I enjoy them one at a time, much like I enjoy a tall glass of iced tea. Mmm... the bitter sorrow is not too tart. It has a flavour.

Star Trek, to me, is all about the characters, first and foremost. Things like moral understories will always be secondary.

The cast and writers did a great job on the characters. A terrific balance of familiarity and freshness. A balance that I expected to be virtually impossible.

Easily my favourite Star Trek movie.

Re: Come on people - am I the only fan who can't drink Abrams' Cool Ai

Let me ask something RAnthony, would you be saying the same things you have said here to a brand new fan of the franchise?

Would you tell this NEW fan that "Trek fandom is well and truly dead"?

This new fan that became a fan because of this new movie?

Reposting for RAnthony, I'd like a response.
