My primary comment is that I would not include the blank pip placeholders. Otherwise, very interesting! Good job.

Kind of reminds me of the fictional future Riker experienced in "Future Imperfect." Those combadges had the arrowhead with a series of bars behind it, which I think were gold and silver like you have done to denote rank.

Nicely executed, but not very practical. You really wouldn't know what rank someone is unless you stare at their badge from inches away. A bit awkward if they happen to be a chesty admiral.

Most rank markers after the TOS television version share that shortcoming to a degree, yeah.

Yeah. Not that you need to be able to tell rank from orbit, but putting 4 ranks with multiple combinations into the with of a thumb is asking for too much - especially on a gold/avocado uniform.

I like it. It's sort of a cross between the "Future Imperfect" and the Maquis/provisional officer rank systems. I wouldn't worry about it not being too visible from a distance since it really follows the trend started in TNG anyway.

Maybe for flag officers, the gold and silver placements can be switched as it was in "Future Imperfect."

I'm curious to see how more detailed enlisted ranks go (petty officers, chiefs, senior chiefs, etc.).

Presumably not. Even though the combadge is divided into separate elements, I imagine there'd be a magnet (or some 24th-century thing that hasn't been invented yet but would accomplish the same task) holding the elements of the badge in place. Get promoted from commander to captain, just pop that black bar off and replace it with another gold one.

Thank you all for all the comments. I figured the rank would also be displayed on another location, like how it was on both the sash and sleeve in TWOK-TUDC. But like you all pointed out it was still too small so I decided to make it a little bigger and easier to see with this update. Also, I made one for the enlisted ranks too so now I just have to think of something for the Admirals.

These are some really nice concepts, Klondike. I think I like your "Alternate from original style" version the best, bringing the command star back into your first design. Assuming you're using the same fabric color scheme as TOS uniforms, based on your other backgrounds, you could also easily include the other two main branches in the insignia (plus a medical red cross variant). Well done!

Eh, the more I look at these, the more they just seem too busy to me. There's just a lot happening in there. And it seems impractical for all these little parts. A single piece badge would be preferable.

Pretty much where I'm at. Nice design work, but way to busy and too many parts. I like stuff like this to be more simplistic.
