College Football 2011 Discussion

OSU had an excellent kicker until the ISU game. Quinn Sharp. He handled the kicking and punting duties, had excellent hang time, average length of punt, and was a machine on field goals and such. Until Friday night. Sob. Last year's kicker, Dan Bailey, won the starting job with the Dallas Cowboys, and won the award for kickers. Kicking hasn't been a problem at O-State for decades.

Sheesh. Too many people dying.
TE found dead this morning

One of Arkansa's tight ends, Garrett Uekman, died at some point during the night. They found him dead in his room this morning. He was a redshit freshman. He was 19 years old. Cripes.

God when will the bad news end in College Football. I don't remember a year where the news in this sport was so bad and with so many good things happening this weekend with all the upsets, this is really sad.

I probably still won't watch the BS National Championship game, but I really can see this thing heading towards another LSU/Alabama borefest. I guess all I can hope for is Stanford getting in an at large bid, which is possible at number 6 but I still see somehow that not happening. Can't leave out the almighty SEC I suppose.

RIP Larry Munson, longtime voice of Georgia Bulldogs football. He was 89.

RIP Mr. Munson. He was a pretty good commentator.

There's one and only one way we'll get a NCG game without the Bama/LSU rematch, tomalak. The new BCS standings are LSU, Bama, Arkansas, and Oklahoma State in 1 through 4. OSU's SOS gives them the slight edge over Stanford, who's back at 5th. The SEC championship game doesn't matter much, but the games this coming weekend do. OSU has a bye. If LSU loses to Arkansas they'd likely only drop to 3rd behind Bama and Arkansas (who would rise to 1st or second). However, if Bama loses to Auburn and then Oklahoma State defeats Oklahoma on the 3rd, OSU would play LSU in the title game because Bama would have to drop at least 2 spots (as would Arkansas after losing to LSU). Not very likely that all this would happen, but there is still the possibility. Oklahoma looked like dog crap, and now they have another injury that likely won't heal until after bedlam--Ronnell Lewis, one of their better DE's will be out with a badly sprained MCL suffered in the Baylor game. If O-State can't beat them this year, something's wrong.

O-State's offense will recover. Baylor type spread offenses light OU up. I think O-State also got cut a little bit of slack because the team was in a bit of a fog all day that day. They all knew the basketball coach who died Thursday night pretty well. Weeden was a friend of Coach Budke's; that's not a secret. Weeden would never use it as an excuse, but he was affected by it that night. The football field and Gallagher Iba where all the basketball practices take place are practically right on top of one another. Stillwater's an isolated little town, so it's a close knit sports community. The offense was off kilter and give Iowa State credit. They're a much improved (and now bowl eligible) team that took advantage and found a way to disrupt OSU who was working on a short week, while they'd had a bye week. ISU was coached well that night (and their QB played exceptionall well, credit where credit is due) No excuses, of course, but....I think the pollsters (maybe not intentionally) cut OSU just a little bit of slack in putting them 4th instead of 5th. Just my theory.

Or it could be that the Big12 from top to bottom is better overall than the Pac12, so it's completely understandable. :D Washington State, Colorado, and co. aren't world beaters either.

I'll preface this by saying I am an Alabama fan.

I 100% do not think a re-match is going to happen, regardless of who is 1-2-3 right now. I think its awesome that the three best teams in the country are all in the SEC, but I think the country would be better served watching each of them slice up non-conference foes in separate bowl games. A platter with 3 heads on it is better than a BCS NCG that will result in an SEC team losing (even if its an SEC team losing to another SEC team).

Sadly, one of the 3 won't get to go to a BCS game, but that just means they will get to decapitate Wisconsin/Penn State/Michigan State in the CapitalOne Bowl. Alabama, despite their 3 losses last season, was still one of the best teams in the nation, and they proved it by completely manhandling Michigan State last year.

I would personally like to see Houston get its chance, but it will probably be VaTech or Okie State, and I think the voters will MAKE it happen. Stanford, OU, and Oregon are all 100% out.

How do you justify denying Alabama the chance if they beat Auburn this week, take care of business, and end up #2? I'm not fond of rematches at all, but if they're still #2, how do they not get in? I'd love it if my Pokes got in, but if Bama doesn't lose...it's foregone, isn't it?

Oh, the Westboro Baptist crazies say they plan to picket Garrett Uekman's funeral. They were planning to picket Coach Budke and Miranda Serna's funeral in Stillwater tomorrow, but backed off at the last minute when a local radio host promised them a little time to spew their hatred.

Who says I'm denying Alabama the chance? I'm going to be one of the biggest Arkansas fans in the world when they play LSU. If Arky beats LSU, Alabama WILL go to the SEC CG and will be #1.

Christ, how pathetic is this?
Sandusky victim leaves school

"Victim number one" (who came forward first but may have been victimized last) has had to leave school in the middle of his senior year because he's being bullied after the news broke. Not because anyone's calling him "fag" or "queer," oh no. The high school students are upset that Joe Paterno was fired and they're blaming the victim for coming forward. If he hadn't spoken up, Paterno would still have a job. :wtf: Good old holier than thou, pedophile protector Joe.

What kind of CULT is State College, Pennsylvania? What are these kids being taught? Hell, everyone in Stillwater loved Eddie Sutton for reviving the deader than dead mens basketball program, but no one bullied or blamed the woman he nearly ran into in his car who turned him in for drunk driving and got him fired in '06. The general consensus was, "Well....he shouldn't have done it. How could he get through the plane crash back in 'o1 and then give into temptation when he hurt his back in the summer of '04?"

State College is a creepy cult. The cult of Joe. They're blaming the kid. Terrific. :scream: All the kid did was turn in the creepy volunteer coach who molested him at his school. He didn't know that Paterno covered for Sandusky for years. All he knew was what Sandusky did to him. It doesn't even make any logical sense for them to blame him.

Another great example of why the NCAA needs to just go ahead and shut this program down for a couple of years at least. I mean, we've already had freaking riots, and now this? Re-victimizing someone who has already been terribly victimized? Sick, people. Sick.

And I should also add that apparently these teachers learned right from Paterno, if they cannot ensure a safe environment for someone who has been victimized. Apparently "cover the football program's ass" is the only language they speak. Every one of them who failed to stand up for this kid ought to be fired too.

You're shutting down a college football program because of the actions of some high schoolers who are unrelated?

It seems to me like a significant portion of the fanbase has problems--as in, serious denial issues and what others have described as cultish behavior, which adds another reason, in addition to the much bigger primary reasons (Sandusky's perversion, a culture of ass-covering, and a cult of personality surrounding Paterno) that the program should be halted for a few years. The reasons I just mentioned are bigger, but making the obsessed assholes among the fans get out and get some fresh air and some perspective would be an added bonus.

Every school has it's uneducated, rabid fan base. There's no need to shut the program down. That doesn't do anybody any good.

The death penalty should only be used to purge the school of students who may have been involved in allegations. Since in this case it was a (former) coach, and the students are innocent, it only harms the school. The coach hasn't even been on staff for over 10 years.

You also have a corrupt staff still remaining, that enabled this behavior, a completely screwed up administration at this school, and the nuts in the fanbase. This is far bigger than just Sandusky and should be treated as such.

The penalties against USC only hurt innocent student athletes. Most of those kids were in junior high school when Reggie Bush played.

Bush and Carroll became NFL millionaires with no consequences whatsoever.

The whole system of college football penalties and enforcements is completely broken. And this Penn State situation is, of course, far more serious than selling memorabilia or an athlete's parents getting free rent.

And, as much as I hate USC, I disagreed with their punishment at the time as well.

The point is that its not fair to the kids. I don't want to "enable" the coaches or administrators, but taking away the right to go to a bowl game does more than take money out of the pockets of the rich administrators, it takes away the student's ability to enjoy the once in a lifetime opportunities.

Perhaps the NCAA should FORCE the school to go to a bowl game, and then FORCE the administrators to forfeit any and all proceeds from the event. Or donate them to a charity to help abused children. But don't take away the games.

Of course the whole system is broken. And now a class of seniors who played for 4 years in this system, who probably had no foreknowledge, are going to be punished, and will remember for the rest of their lives how this tragedy prevented them from getting to be honored with a trip to a bowl... which has always supposed to have been an HONOR since the inception of bowl games.

I still don't understand your hatred of the fans. They had nothing to do with this.
