Cobra Kai - The Karate Kid Saga Continues

The strangest bit of pacing in the universe of the show was how the tournament was split into three days. So everyone shows up, watches a 2 minute fight, then leaves.

That, and the fact that apparently only two years have passed in-universe from start to finish. Boy did these people cram a lot of allegiance changes (and the odd spinal cord injury/coma) into that span.

I thought the final five were about as good a finale as the show could reasonably be expected to have. I mean, it was completely ridiculous in a lot of ways, but that's Cobra Kai! I loved that Johnny got to be the hero in the end and got the final fight, I've always thought of it as his show and some of my favourite stuff comes from season one when it was just him training Miguel. The yacht scene was absolutely perfect in its craziness, right down to the obvious stunt doubles and the "NOOOOO..."/"MERCY!" bit.

Some of the secondary characters definitely got neglected in the final five: Devon, Anthony and Kenny disappeared for a lot of it and had about two lines between them. I alwasy found Bert amusing and he didn't appear at all. In fact all the lesser kid characters got contained to just the one moment where Penis Breath ate crisps loudly. Might have been actor availability or just money-saving. But all the main characters did get satisfying endings.

I'm going to miss the show, I had thought it was running out of steam in season 4/5 but the finaleseason was very entertaining and I could watch more.

I hate to double post, but…

Loved the end. Everything wrapped up nicely. But… A couple of things…

Karate Kid fanboy in me would have loved a hint at what’s to come for Daniel.. No biggie, but it is what it is…

My nagging question… As I think about it now.. The happy ending with Chozen showing up at Kim Dah-Eun’s academy all smiles and whatever. Glad she is taking a more passionate approach to karate, but she literally just killed her grandfather to take it over. How is this ok in the grand scheme of things? He intended her to kill Kreese. Neither way is the path to happy endings…

Anyway… Looking forward to the movie…

There was a lot of out-of-place blood lust at the end there. Kim murders someone, Kreese kills someone, Kreese and Silver are likely dead.... all stemming from some inconsequential under-18 karate tournament in the valley.

Well the show did go into some silly places at times but it really is part of it's charm. The fact that every conflict these people have revolves around karate being one of them. The show is is more grounded I would say in the first couple of seasons but still fun even when it's not. Also with Kreese he at least had his bad experience in the military to sort of explain his behavior as well.

I actually enjoyed some of the technical aspects of the show, like when the kids were practicing their forms (kata/poom-se). I recognized several of them - pieces from the advanced Bassai/Palsek, Naihanchi/Chulgi Shodan forms, along with a couple of the intermediate Pyung-ahn forms. All traditional-styles from Chung Do Kwon and Moo Do Kwon TKD/TSD systems, both of which have ties to the older Okinawan styles (like the fictional Miyagi-Do system). The performance was somewhat clunky, and you can tell they worked on the choreography for the fight scenes more than the form practice scenes, but it's nice to see that someone did some research for the world-building aspect and the training side of things. :)

Finally saw the ending. I enjoyed it. Through the years you forget the name of the show is Cobra Kai when Miyagi-Do is the good guy for so much of it. But they brought it back to season 1, what Johnny Lawrence did for those kids at the beginning before Creese corrupted it. That Johnny's version of Cobra Kai was a good thing. They pulled off the crowd pleasing ending.

What I got from it, is that he's still running Myagi Do and he's helping Johnny with his students and vice versa.
