I've read a couple of reviews and it sounds like the movie started out as one thing, then the studio thought, "Oh, we can turn this into a 'Karate Kid' movie'," so they rewrote a few scenes and added Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio to it and they only show up towards the end of the movie.​

Not exactly true. From what I learned from the spoilers I read, the character of Mr. Han is seen in more than half of the movie. The character of Daniel is seen a little less, maybe he is included in the movie towards the end. and an important Karate Kid and Cobra Kai character is seen at the end of the movie.

One review thought the Joshua Jackson stuff (none of which is in any trailer) was more interesting than the Karate Kid remake part. Another review thought they blew through the story so fast nothing had time to matter.
