Spoilers Clues on Picard show from Picard Countdown comic (possible spoilers)

I raised the issue because it occurred to me while reading, but...

Pretty sure the Prime Directive doesn't apply to the slave race of a warp capable species.

I'm guessing the difference here is the cat's out of the bag already. Even if they were pre-warp, the Romulans made first contact. Therefore they have knowledge of offworld life, are part of galactic civilization, and (at least in the Federation's mind) the Romulans have an obligation to help evacuate them as subjects (if not citizens) of the Romulan Empire.

Okay. That works.

The new captain of the Enterprise, will that turn out to be Rios?
Too young - Raffi Musiker is only a Lt Commander in this comic, and Rios is a good 10 years younger again. Worf is probably a good shout, as others have said. What other past-Trek characters could be in the frame otherwise, do we think?

They might go for a rando, like how the Enterprise-B went to Harriman instead of Scotty, Spock or Sulu.

Nero's entire motivation must now be brought into question. It's nonsensical of him to blame Spock and the Federation for his wife's death when he had literally years of notice to evacuate her, even if only on the Narada.

Oh he's a total patriot who is completely unwilling to blame his government for not allowing his wife to emigrate to safety in a reasonable amount of time.
I highly doubt the Praetor is going to waste time punishing Nero if he smuggles his wife aboard the Narada. He was a miner. The Tal Shiar have better things to do.

The Romulans seem like the sort of totalitarian culture where absolutely everything - unless you were wealthy and powerful - has do be done on the level and signed in triplicate.

All the more reason nero should blame romulus, not the federation

So if the romulans hadn't colonized the planet and enslaved that species Picard wouldn't give a shit and let them die, what kind of effed up morality is that.

Have you watched TNG? There were a few times where Picard would have been willing to let a pre-warp civilization die because of the Prime Directive, if someone else hadn't already forced their hand into it. Data in Pen Pals, Worf's Brother in that episode I can't remember the name of, are two examples I can think of.

It was always nonsensical. Blaming someone who tried their hardest to help (but failed) is idiotic. Nero was a madman.
He had an entire crew that went along with his actions. You could just say they're all crazy, but that's just bad writing. The Picard show and/or associated media should come up with another reason why they would be angry at the Federation.

All the more bizarre he's suddenly concerned now (to the point of basically a panic attack) just because these primitives happened to have been enslaved by Romulans. That's literally the only difference.

I hope Worf isn't a captain. Not out of any spite for the character, but because I've always thought that what Sisko said about Worf probably never being offered a command of his own after the incident with Jadzia and the spy should turn out to be right in the long run, to show that certain happenings do have long-term consequences.

Kor
I don't want to see him as a captain in Starfleet because I hope he took what he learned under Picard and Sisko and put it to good use as a reformer of Klingon society as an ambassador with Martok's ear.
