Cloned Jadzia

Why is there so much negativity on jadzia from ds9 fan? . I think shes a great character. Yes she left the show, but that was because she wanted to better her self regarding her acting. I haven't watched Becker, but i know she wasted the opportunity and should of stayed on DS9. But why does nearly everyone hate her character i cant understand it? :/

My thoughts on Jadzia are as follows:

The writers had no clear vision for the character early on, other than a rather vague sense that she would be somewhat aloof and superior due to her centuries of experience. Her early interaction with Bashir is a good example of this.

It wasn't enough to build a character, and the "superior being" motif that was prominent on earlier incarnations of Trek never worked on DS9. (The writers tried it again with the genetically enhanced Bashir, but after having him do some superhuman computation early in the sixth season, they abandoned the "Bashir as Data" concept as well.)

The turning point for Jadzia is the second season episode "Blood Oath." She decides to fulfill Curzon's vow, and for the first time we see the fiesty, determined Jadzia that would define her character for the rest of her time on the show.

Here is the interesting part: from Blood Oath onward, she basically turns into a female Curzon. The affinity for Klingons, the love of drink, parties, gambling, sex. These are Curzon's tastes and interests, as defined from very early in the show. The writers had a much better idea of who they wanted Curzon to be than Jadzia. Eventually, they pretty much abandoned Jadzia in favor of Curzon.

What makes this interesting is that it strikes me that this is exactly the problem a symbiotic race such as the Trill would end up having. If a very strong, knowledgable, successful personality such as Curzon were inserted into the mind of a young, inexperienced person such as Jadzia, the previous personality would probably impose itself over time and eventually dominate.

I don't think the writers intended to do this, but that's basically what happened as I see it. So I don't think Jadzia ever worked out all that well on DS9, but I think her character didn't work in an interesting way.

On a side note, I always enjoyed the "Old Man" dynamic with Sisko. Something about their interaction always rang true, and it is just interesting to think of renewing an old friendship like that with a new individual.

Not everyone hates her, some people really hate her and some people really love her. She seems to be quite a divisive character. But the haters of anything/anyone are always vocal, so you get the impression that 'everyone hates her'.

A poll would give a more realistic view. I had the impression that Bajorans as a whole were really hated here, based on the frequent posts of a few posters, but when I made the poll recently, it turned out that an overwhelming majority thinks favorably of the Bajorans and the haters are just a vocal minority. It would be interesting to run a poll on Jadzia, too. A while ago there was a poll on this forum "who do you prefer, Jadzia or Ezri" and Jadzia was winning, albeit in a close race.

Yeah, I felt the same way when I first came here. The character won me over immediately and I was shocked how much hate there was towards her. Now that I've been here for awhile, I can understand it, although I can't relate to it at all. It's funny now what one person loves about a character can be exactly what another person hates.

I've always found her confidence and free-spirited, cheerful, and independent attitude charming and endearing, but then there are a lot of people who call her smug and shallow because of how good she feels about herself and the way that she toys with others. As the expression goes, "one man's trash is another man's treasure". At least it seems like most people are in agreement that Terry Farrell is a total babe, although even in that area we have a few VISUALLY-IMPAIRED LUNATICS who have called her unattractive. D.E., I think there was a poll about Jadzia in the past, but I forget how it went. I have a feeling the haters won in the end, though. :(

I'd love for Jadzia to come back, because, I dispised Ezri. She was a smug little... fiend. The way she snogged Worf, then went with Bashir was just disgusting. I don't think Jadzia should have been killed off; it would have been really cool to have seen a TrillxKlingon child (scary, but cool)

She did get a little boring sometimes, but she was such a unique character. I did like her, but put her next to Ezri and anyone I know would prefer Jadzia. I think Ezri should have been a guy so it would have been super awkward between him, Bashir and Worf.

Good god .... Ezri still looks amazing.

Jadzia was killed by a wraith in Dukat's body. So she could at least return as some kind of ghost seen by prophet-Sisko, until he sets her free or something.

Sad thing is, there almost certainly won't ever be any new DS9. So this argument is moot anyway. Though if it did come back, I can't imagine a plot to bring Jadzia back that wouldn't be an eyerolling facepalm.

I don't hate her. I don't think she ever made the show worse, I just don't feel she really added much. Some of that is the fault of the writers, and some of it is the fault of the actress.

Basically on a show chock full of great actors, Farrell just comes off as sort of mediocre by comparison. Not that she is bad, but all of the other main characters and most of the supporting cast are much more skilled.

Also Jadzia basically has very little personality. Her personality is Dax. The writers never really bother to tell us much about Jadzia's background, family, hopes, dreams, etc. It is almost always focused on the symbiote and on the past lives. This leaves Jadzia as sort of a blank, who has merely become "Curzon II".

I'm not a huge Ezri fan either, but at least she had her own personality, ambitions, hopes, fears, family, etc. aside from the Dax symbiote. Ezri got more development in one season than Jadzia got over six of them. So I find her the superior character. Also the actress was more skilled (imo obviously).

Speaking for myself, I like Jadzia just fine But...a lot of the resentment, for me, comes from the exaggerated coyness with which she treats Bashir, and other men--and then gets all "freewilling" with still other men--and then, after her death, we find that "If Worf hadn't come along, it would've been you..."

Yeah--great way of showing it, Jadzia. :techman:

Ezri...well, I've always admired her authenticity. She doesn't decieve, really--or at least she doesn't intend to, certainly not for "playing games".

(narrows eyes) I'm...watching...you...buster....

In all seriousness..."smug"? Ezri?

As for Worf...as Ezri made it absolutely clear--1), her night with Worf was the part of her that was Jadzia was so drawn to Worf--she effectively mistook Jadzia's feelings for hers; and 2), she honestly didn't realize where her heart truly lied, and that "I would never have hidden something like that from you."

Unlike Jadzia hid her feelings from Julian, I might add....

Well, DevilEyes...the poll...is...ALIVE again....
