Spoilers Classic Race All But Confirmed

Did you cry foul every time they used Klingons or Romulans or other familiar species on TNG or DS9 or ENT?

No, I eventually got bored and tuned out. Much like I have with Discovery, still only making it through 12 of the 15 episodes. The Talosians, in and of themselves, wouldn't be a problem. It is when you put it as a cherry on top of callback mountain that is Discovery that it is problematic.

I mean, I know they want to sell the show to as many die-hard fans as possible. But, at some point they are going to have to let the crutch go and stand on their own. Even hardcore fans will only hang around for so long when all you're doing is constantly metaphorically jabbing them in the ribs going "Remember this piece of minutiae? So do we!!!"

Yes, other shows had callbacks sometimes. But it just seems to this observer that the producers don't trust ... whom? The writers? Fans? To write or watch a new show that fully stands on its own and can just be a show without being .... SO connected to the characters we're familiar with. Really, I 'd like the show just as well with no Sarek, Mudd, Ent, Pike, Talosians now. Just go do Discovery things already.

I’m still upset that the BBC couldn’t cough up the dough for a Peter Cushing poster, so, yeah, bring on the fan wank.

Hollywood doesn't trust the audience. Hasn't for years. This fan base is no exception as demonstrated by repeated visits to the TWOK well.

I feel the reverse, want even more fanwank. In season 3 they should have prime Lorca and young Kirk.

In truth, I'd be fine either way but in light of everything... fanwank for the win!

Not that even I like the word "fanwank", though. Here's the reason why. I've been wanting to say this all year, ever since I came back as a regular member. I think it sounds disgusting. Especially the "wank" part of the word. Anyone ever look that word up? Yeah. It means "masturbation". And fan is short for "fanatic". When I post on TrekBBS, I'm interested in talking about Star Trek, not fanatical masturbation.

I don't have a problem revisiting the Talosians in principle. They're an example of TOS aliens worth revisiting because of the important role they've played in Star Trek history. They were the original aliens, and they were the aliens in the first Hugo award-winning episode.

Also, "The Cage" is at least somewhat more than simply a retelling of Forbidden Planet. In Forbidden Planet the Krell super-technology allowed the Krell unrestricted mental control of matter which provided the means and opportunity for their subconsciouses under primitive motives to activate their mechanism to murder each other overnight before they could realize what was happening, with a subtext of the Krell Armageddon arguably being allegorical to a nuclear apocalypse. The Talosian superpower is a twist on that. Instead of externalized and objectified willpower, it is internalized pure mentality as a substitute for physicality, leading to lethargy and the physical decay of their civilization, with a subtext of the Talosians as an allegory of television-addicted couch potatoes in whatever terms that would have been expressed in in 1964. Substituting computer-addicted for television-addicted, that allegory is quite relevant today, whereas the idea of nuclear apocalypse is arguably less immediately so.

In other words, the Talosians have the potential to facilitate the telling of meaningful stories regarding relevant issues we face today in our relationship with technology.

Whether the episode(s) involving the Talosians is/are good naturally depends upon the execution.

Totally agree with you. Even as a linguist (so I’m professionally interested in compound words like this) I can’t stand that term. I’m glad it’s not just me.

I’ve suggested “fandering” before now - which is a blend of “fan” and “pandering”. I think it’s much more pleasant than the alternative.

Problem for a lot of us is, that anything negative we say gets magnified to the Nth degree, while most of the positive things we say get ignored.

I've been more than complimentary towards the acting for all of Discovery's first season. Less so the writing and design, but those are the things people eat up.

I was more than complimentary towards the first trailer. That gets lost. Because people are more interested in needling me for losing interest once I find out there's more Klingon non-sense, and now the Talosians.

That is the challenge that anyone creating something like a weekly show like Star Trek faces - over the past 50+ years Star Trek has created a fanbase made of tens of millions of individuals. Each of those fans come to Star Trek in their formative years (usually), and each fan has a unique response to the show they grew up with. That is basic psychology, and for me that formative decade was the 70's, when, as a kid 6-8ish I was watching TOS reruns, and that was all I knew of Star Trek because that was all there was. As the franchise was built out over the decades from then til now, each new show or movie would be someone else's first Star Trek, whereas us old farts would see the new show through the lens of what came before. For an 8 year-old now in 2018, Discovery IS Star Trek. Now, depending on that 8 year-old's appetite for more and their natural curiosity, that may make them want to reach back through the 50+ year pool of Star Trek to see what else is out there. But Discovery will inform the lens through which they see that previous Trek.

And that's okay. I just find it a bit sad that - as Star Trek fans - we have to be reminded of the concept of IDIC.

For an 8 year-old now in 2018, Discovery IS Star Trek.

My 11 year-old has tried Discovery multiple times, he is a fan of TOS and The Orville. I'm sure part of that is my affection for TOS, bleeding in.

My daughter? She's a TNG fan. Definite black sheep of the family.

Yeah.... a couple years, but wow, the experience grayed him quickly.... ;)
The man was agonizing over the people who died on that mission. Even in the Season 2 trailer we see him very much passionate about not allowing people to die. That burden clearly weighs heavily on him.

I'd guess that the more you object to the use of the term, the more people will bring it to bear in arguments such as this.

See also: "STD" etc....

Because people are awesome.

Discovery season one was a Talosian illusion. Burnham will wake up in the sonic shower, realise that spore drive was silly and hairless troll Klingons should have tipped her off that she's really Vina.
