Over on the ST XI thread there is some talk about how Kirk could take command of the E when there are obviously other officers on deck. It was mentioned that the writers have dropped this ball before. Case in point.

In this episode (TCOTEOF) Kirk, Spock, Scotty & Uhura beam down to the planets surface. Sulu is injured at his post early on and is revived with Cordrazine which seems to put him in a rather loopy state and I would imagine, unable to command. And since Chekov was not present (and maybe not even on the series yet), who was running the show?

Any thoughts?

My guess: Lt. DeSalle, especially since he took charge in "The Catspaw".

It wasn't uncommon for lieutenants to be left in command of the ship.

Hansen and DeSalle are good examples.



I see that middyseafort mentioned DeSalle before I did. I'm too slow.

...Although of course Kirk could give temporary command to just about anybody, including Ensigns and Crewmen 3rd Rate. In many navies of yore and today, Kirk could even appoint his pet parakeet if he so wanted!

It's merely that giving command to a cadet who ain't technically accepted to do Starfleet things yet - and to a cadet who has snuck on board, even - is a silly thing to do when there are other alternatives around.

We don't know that to be the case. Hell, we know very little about the situation in the movie.

If Kirk is seen taking the Kobayashi Maru then he could easily be a Lieutenant (as Saavick was) and we don't have any evidence of higher ranking command officers being available.
