Christian Bale - Last Proper Bloke Left in Hollywood

Well it's clear that Hermiod classifies About a Boy and Fool's Gold as being exactly the same, and that doing a McG movie for a big paycheck isn't selling out. The only thing that could possibly make him hate Bale right now is if he came out and said Rock Band was meant to be played with a guitar and drumset.

Have you seen As Good As It Gets?

No, but I didn't think that was considered a rom-com. I'm talking about the vehicles for female stars like the three Jennifers (Lopez, Aniston and Garner).

It's a romantic comedy with a bit of drama tossed in.

I have just had a quick read through the Wikipedia article and it doesn't read like the sort of film I'm talking about. It reads like the romance is more of a B-story in the larger story of Nicholson's character's life, but that could just be the way the synopsis is written.

um, Will Smith in Hitch?

predictable it may have been, but that was a very strong male lead, he did it very well and it didn't depend on him gurning or being overly funny.

plus, Eva Mendez

and, excuse me, but other than the rom-com/fantasy 13 Going on 30, what romcoms has Jen Garner done?

Hitch did extremely well and made some good money.

I agree. Forty Year Old Virgin was a surprise but solid hit and it was considered a romantic comedy as was Knocked Up. Both of them were strong movies. Forgetting Sarah Marshall this year was really good.

^I have not seen Forgetting Sarah Marshall but how is a film about a guy who gets dumped for someone (supposedly) more attractive "romantic" ?

^From the synopsis it doesn't sound good.

He gets used, ignored, cheated on, dumped, suffers a nervous breakdown, gets back with the woman that caused all this, can't get an erection and then gets beaten up ?

How is that a strong male lead ?

Very strong. The female leads were more supporting than leads.

It was funny, had heart, and actually Kunis, who annoys the hell out of me, did a good job as well. But it was a good movie.

Judd Aptow makes good romantic comedies.

I like how honest Bale is - nothing to do with him being a real man or not, he just says he won't take a part that doesn't interest him, and in any case, because of that he thinks he'd suck at it. He doesn't really criticise the people who are in Romcoms or who like them, he just says they're not for him, a lot of actors would just take the pay-cheque - he's got integrity.

Yknow the worst probelm with rom-coms? None of them star Joe Flanigan! The fools, the unmitigated fools...

Because those "fools" want their film to be successful and make money, Joe sending people screaming from the cinema across the country = bad movie :p

It looks like Hermiod isn't getting any love so i have to agree with him.

There are enough other actors doing rom-coms that it's fine and dandy if Bale doesn't want to.
Also, maybe he means just those cheesy ones with Aniston or Lopez as the opposite, where there's some thing where the guy has to pretend to be gay or the woman has to tell her parents he's rich or some silly crap. As Good As It Gets , to me, is more like a drama with some good black comedy thrown in.

Which probably explains why I don't like rom-coms. ;)

That's exactly the type I mean. They're fairy stories without all the pumpkins and magic shoes.

Dramatic actors cannot do comedy as, unlike drama, it is not a skill that one learns. Either one has it or not. It is not by accident that comedy actors do well in dramatic roles, but not the opposite.

Then you need to see Analyze This and Analyze That to see Robert de Niro holding his own with Billy Crystal or The Whole Nine Yards and see Bruce Willis holding his own with Matthew Perry.
