Spoilers Children in Need clip now online

That's not an either/or. Both are possible.

The thing is, I don't know if my issue is with Bradley or with the material Moffat has written for Bradley to play. We have two minutes here, and it's impossible to judge.

Sure. Both are possible. But for both that narrows the field of talent. And what actor merely wants to imitate? And to what end? Just so it more fully fits with a story most people haven’t seen? And can’t because chunks are lost?

I look at Karl Urban’s work as McCoy as a great example of being in the spirit and recognizable as McCoy without being limited by having to imitate the choices made by another actor.

I'm not saying that Bradley isn't recognizable as the first Doctor, nor that he shouldn't bring his own interpretation to the role. I'm only saying that I'm having difficulty reconciling this clip with "The Tenth Planet." One on hand, the Doctor is a little too sprightly. On the other, he's bafflingly thick. That's my issue, and it may be that this clip will work better in context.

Perhaps, yes, it will work better for you in context.

I think what I’m ultimately trying to say is you might have unreasonable expectations.

TBH, I have no expectations. It's a Steven Moffat story. Experience has taught me that any expectations will set me up for disappointment.
Same here, although I was impressed with "World Enough and Time" and "The Doctor Falls" and my expectations were largely met for both the Mondasian Cybermen and The Simm Master. Call me cautiously optimistic for "Twice Upon a Time."

But you do have an expectation that Bradley's performance would fit Hartnell's. Right? That's what you are disappointed by, that they don't match, if I'm understanding correctly.

Which I have no problem with, if this weren't meant to fit inside an already existing story.
If you see it as a denouement, a whimsical coda to The Tenth Planet as much as it is to the series 10 finale, which is really is (I mean, isn't The Doctors Falls really Twelfth's true regeneration story?), it sort of works. I mean, he was fine when he walked out of Ben and Polly.

I didn't think it felt "right," either. I tried to match this up to Hartnell's performance in "The Tenth Planet" and failed utterly.

I agree. I'm one of the few people that ranks the First Doctor as one of their favorites (he's tied with Four as my second favorite Doctor. Nine is still champ), so I notice the differences pretty quickly and it's a little grating. Bradley's voice is higher than Hartnells for starters.

But like Professor Zoom said, Bradley's bringing his own interpretation to the role, (and let's not forget that Richard Hurndall did the same) and frankly I'm glad to see the First Doctor in the modern era and this is the only way we'll get him. I'm also okay with the idea of recasting in the case of Doctors too old to play the role. If Who is still going for the 60th anniversary, I'd like to see the early Doctors get some spotlight.

Or....instead of spending money on shit like "Class", why not churn out a mini-series or t.v. movie each year during Who's downtime that feature earlier Doctors.

Except it's retconning the Doctor having a glowing hand around Polly, as seen in the trailer.

Admittedly, that is bothersome to me as well. But as Christopher pointed out, that probably is done to make a point of familiarity of this iteration of the show with the old one, even if I'd rather that glowing hand had been of a different color, personally.

What colour of energy did you think they should have used? I always liked the golden regeneration energy, as opposed to a white out fuzz..but then again as the Doctor gets a new life cycle, maybe that has also something to do with it. Or, things could have changed as a result of the time war..a Mcguffin that seems to be used for Everything..annoyingly

Since the First Doctor's television era was in black and white, why wouldn't the energy be golden when viewed in color.

That's a good point. Actually, it might be an interesting thing to watch this whole episode in black and white!
