In the 60s, maybe not. But now, I think there would be enough awareness that he couldn't be Australian.

Even now, I wouldn't be so sure. There are Americans who'd identify people from other parts of their own country as foreigners, and would blithely lump Brits, Aussies and South Africans all together without thinking twice.
