That’s not quite the flex you think it is. Prior to the general access to AI, using the internet was not nearly as energy intensive as it is now (and, unlike the internet, much of the AI energy drain is on stuff not yet accessible to the public).

Now, is internet use without impact on the environment? Of course not. But it’s not nearly the simple reductionist issue you imply.

Whereas huge portions of the world aren't even online yet are dealing with climate change. They may find your user objectionable. But you've decided one use is fine and the other is not by the yardstick that conveniently lets you carry on doing what you want to do.

I'm not an AI apologist. It has issues. But I do have an issue with people just shooting down people that use it. If you're going to do that I can have a go at you using your phone.

Well my observation of it won't change its status. But in your opinion that is the case. Others may have different opinions.

There are plenty of humans posting slop, and some writers writing it. But I guess that's why we choose what to consume or engage with.

It's kinds bland, but there are ideas that could be starting points for real creatives. I really liked this bit:

That's a detail Trek writers have been forgetting since DS9.

Well, except for the optimism of DS9's crew that a war-ravaged world could recover, that Starfleet and the Federation could get through a bigger war and make a new peace, and that people from enemy worlds could find some trust and work together for the common good.

And the optimism of Voyager's crew that Starfleet and Maquis could work together to travel across the galaxy and make it home without sacrificing their principles.

And the optimism of Enterprise's crew that they could go where no human had been and prove Earth's worth.

And the optimism of Discovery's crew that even after a major catastrophe worlds could come back together again and restore the Federation and Starfleet. (And, earlier, the optimism that one person who made a very bad mistake could find her way back to where she could do the most good.)

And the optimism that a retired old Starfleet officer could get off his butt and make a difference again.

And the optimism that a bunch of lower decks goofballs could grow up and make great Starfleet officers.

And the optimism of a bunch of kids who were effectively slave labour that they could figure out how to use a ship to get to a place of freedom and opportunity.

And the optimism of a man who's seen something awful in his future who doesn't let that stop him from leading his crew.

And the optimism of a bunch of kids who are going to be the new generation of officers in a rebuilt Starfleet.

And the optimism of whoever thought that script for Section 31 would make something worth watching.

Lots and lots of optimism.

I wasn’t talking about taxation, but yes, I support progressive taxation rates. I also pay them, willingly, as part of a household in the upper tax bracket of the country of Canada, in the province with the highest combined tax burden (our household is in the 57% overall tax bracket). There are people far richer than me but I am already in the bracket—as are they. But I can only speak for myself.

Where did I say I don’t use AI? And, for the record, I don’t use instagram, Snapchat, facebook, or any other of the myriad social media platforms out there. This BBS is as close as it gets.

It feels ironic that you're getting upset that you didn't get the reaction to your post that you were hoping for and accusing other people of taking themselves too seriously.

I think it's pretty generally known that AI is a contentious topic these days, so it's hard for me to believe that you would have dropped a thread about AI in here with no thought given to the possibility that it might go in this direction.

You asked a chatbot to come up with something for you, that is hardly an experiment. Now not including the contraversies of said, which I addressed in a previous post (and I would hope it came across as balanced) you of all people as a professor should be aware of the extreme limitations that this function has. It's going to regurgitate what it collates online and recycle the same phrases. It cannot stimulate conversation because it cannot create talking points.

This is not a discussion about the future of the franchise, you asked a bot to write fanfiction for you.

I see it on newspaper comments section. On an article things like "Who?" or "Boring" and "I'm not interested in this" etc. And you went into an article for something you don't care about to comment about it?

That sounds like you're saying all criticism must be stifled and only compliments be given? Sometimes honest feedback can be negative and wanting to purge all negative discussion is akin to purging honesty.
