Characters you like better than the Actor.

Characters you like more than the Actor.

I don't know how to explain this question to you guys but have you ever seen an interview with a famous actor and they come off as an asshole but you enjoyed the character they play on screen?

The other day, I watched Naked Gun with O.J. Simpson. The guy is a complete scumbag but I can't help but laugh along with his character in the Naked Gun Series. It throws you off a bit since...well it's O.J.

I guess I don't know enough about actors in RL to make a judgment about this. And whatever we do "know" could just be PR spin. OJ is a rare exception since he was in the news for something unrelated to show biz.

Not sure...

Apparently Edward Norton is a complete douchebag and almost impossible to work with - but I really like him as an actor - which I guess means I've liked a lot of the characters he's played.

Disclaimer: Obviously, I don't know Edward Norton and the rumors of his douchebaggery may be unjust and unfounded. :p

Christian Bale himself says he is an unabashed dick and a lot of the fans who meet him say it ain't far from the mark, but damn if I don't have a man crush on half of the characters he plays.

Re: Characters you like more than the Actor.

Iron Man or most RDJ roles - he sometimes comes off really bad in interviews, but he makes entertaining films.

All Russell Crowe roles. To be fair, I have heard that Crowe can be really nice or really bad, but either way, he is a great actor who puts effort into his work.

James T Kirk - Shatner seems to be an utterly self-involved flake - but he too is a good actor and created a legendary role.

Jerry Doyle's personal politics annoy me to a great degree, but his Babylon 5 character, Garibaldi, is probably my favorite human character on the series.

Having heard the audio version read by himself of Tom's Baker's autobiography I think we can put him in a the same category. For many he's their favourite Doctor but as a man he's up himself.

I was going to say Crowe as well.

I really liked Ben Stone on Law and Order. Michael Moriarty is not my favourite human being.

Recognizing bad behavior doesn't automatically make it go away.

No one's...saying it does...:cardie:
I could be wrong, but I think Venardhi wasn't replying to your post. He earlier posted this:

To which Trekker replied thus:
I'd say a dick that admits he's a dick isn't much of a dick at all.

The statement you quoted above makes a lot more sense as a reply to Trekker's. I also think Trekker is incorrect.

For me, James West (The Wild Wild West) and 'Pappy' Boyington (Baa, Baa, Black Sheep), as played by Robert Conrad, were great characters. (And yes, I know Greg Boyington was a real person.) So was his Pasquinel in the Centennial miniseries. Conrad himself comes off as several different kinds of unpleasant. His portrayal of G. Gordon Liddy in Will may have been closer to what he's really like.
