Character Ratings: Counsellor Deanna Troi

As a mod, I never enforced such a rule. If a person has something new to add to a topic, why not let them do it? As opposed to creating a new thread, which really just accomplishes the same thing.

As for Troi... I don't know. She improved over time. Her character in "Encounter at Farpoint" was pure cringe. I liked her and Riker together. Didn't like her and Worf, or her occasional "romances of the week". Most of her episodes weren't that great, though she had at least one good one (Face of the Enemy). Jellico did her a HUGE favor when he made her dress like an officer. I don't think she should have made commander while Data was stuck at LCDR (but that's more about Data; if the ship could have three commanders onboard, it could have had four). My favorite appearances with her were actually in the later movies and on Voyager and Picard. And yes, she was awesome on "Lower Decks".

Overall, I'd say 3 in Encounter, progressing to 8 at the end. Give her a 6 overall.

When was the last time she even spoke as a counselor? Did she ever do that after TNG? I don't think so. So IMO it must have an episode of TNG, season 5 or 6 maybe. Wait: Maybe season 7 Phantasms but that was to Data. Does it count?

There are no official rules about resurrecting necrotic threads. For me, the deciding factors are 1. how old, 2. was any new meaningful content added and 3. does dialog continue. (And then there's whether I like you or not but I can't say that.)

I think she did for Barclay on Voyager? But I never did watch the whole series. I wasn't really a fan. But I'm attempting to watch it on Netflix.

Yes, you're right I had forgotten about that. But it's more like a favor for a friend than as a counselor, IMO. It's was a kinda for old time's sake thing.

In "Pathfinder", she definitely counseled Barclay, whose holodeck addiction had seriously relapsed.

Yeah, but her counseling didn't do squat. Barclay won the day by stubbornly defying orders and do whatever he wanted to the point of risking arrest and ruining his career and not once did he do what she advised him to...

Don't forget some incredibly clever use of the holographic Voyager, courtesy of the holo-addiction she was trying to cure him of.

I said she counseled him, not that she counseled him well.

I always liked Troi and I like Marina Sirtis. Was very happy to see her show up on Picard. Being shitty in Season 1/2 of TNG isn’t a crime. Worf was crap in those seasons too compared to later.

Also liking the mod response to the necro.

Her advice was crap also in the late seasons, remember when all that Data could feel were bad feelings like anger and pleasure at seeing someone hurt or dead? That's when she told him that there were no bad emotions. He even reminded her of that later when he became sadistic at the prompting of his "brother". That was really bad advice!!

No she really didn't. When Data said he felt pleasure she gave a long dramatic pause - switch to commercial. She said that emotions like anger aren't bad its what you do with those emotions that counts. She said anger can lead to positive things like correcting an injustice... obviously him getting pleasure out of killing that Borg wasn't positive.

The point is that that advice gave Data a justification for not agreeing that his brother was only feeding him negative emotions... That's precisely what he said and he referred specifically to Troi's advice.
