The network would get so worried about not antagonizing the white South that the obvious didn't occur to them, that Star Trek had no hope with a narrow-minded, racist audience to begin with.All the times Scotty took the center seat, it should have been Uhura, Chekov, or Sulu. Scotty was fun, but he kept proving his place was in the engine room.
Besides, he also cheated on the Kobayashi Maru test and did not get a medal for original thinking - he should not have been allowed to be in command of the ship.
Had they put a black woman in command (even temporarily) it would have been a pretty bold statement for the day (it lost something when they did it in TAS).
I like Scotty in command, though.
