Change an element of an episode

All the times Scotty took the center seat, it should have been Uhura, Chekov, or Sulu. Scotty was fun, but he kept proving his place was in the engine room.
Besides, he also cheated on the Kobayashi Maru test and did not get a medal for original thinking - he should not have been allowed to be in command of the ship.
Had they put a black woman in command (even temporarily) it would have been a pretty bold statement for the day (it lost something when they did it in TAS).
The network would get so worried about not antagonizing the white South that the obvious didn't occur to them, that Star Trek had no hope with a narrow-minded, racist audience to begin with.

I like Scotty in command, though.

It only goes to show that they were not as advanced as they wanted the audience to believe they were. Their tolerance of people of different ethnic backgrounds only went so far.

The fear of not wanting to risk market share...uh, I mean offending anyone.

Then we got All In The Family that showed how stupid they were.

All in the family was the US version of Till Death Us Do Part! The show that introduced us all to Alf Garnett, the bespectacled bigot who hated everyone and they loathed him too!

This is not an original idea -- I heard it on Mission Log where John and Ken had heard it from someone who wrote to the show. Anyway, here's the idea:

In "A Taste of Armageddon," what if they discovered that the civilization on Vendikar had long abandoned the planet and had automated their war games program. Which would mean that the people on Eminiar VII had been killing themselves to stop a war with an enemy that no longer existed. That idea blew my mind and has all kinds of new moral and philosophical implications.
I love this idea. And as long as we're making wishful changes, I'd have this happen, along with actually finding out what the people of Vendikar looked like and what kind of world they had. Of course it would have to be a 2-part episode.

"Mirror, Mirror" - Show a bit more of the evil counterparts in the regular universe. How do barbarians try to act like civilized men? How long did their deception last and what tipped Spock off?
It probably happened about 20 seconds after they finished beaming, when Evil Kirk bellowed for someone to hand him an agonizer so he could torture the transporter operator.

In Turnabout Intruder, I would have told Shatner to stop chewing the scenery.
I blame the director for some of that.

I think the director didn't tell him firmly enough to tone it down. And WTF was that ridiculous nail-filing BS when Janice Lester (in Kirk's body) was sitting in the Captain's chair? Did they think the audience was too stupid to remember that this wasn't actually Kirk, so they added some "stereotypical" female mannerisms?

You nailed it!

Taste of Armageddon is a strong enough concept for a two parter. I would love to see that.

Could be. I find it more interesting if the Mirror Kirk is at least as smart and crafty as "our" Kirk is, though.

As Nicholas Meyer discovered during the movies, Shatner is at his hammiest on the first few takes. The more takes you have him do, the more naturalistic he gets. Compare his more subdued performances in STII and STVI with Shatner directing himself in STV.

STV is the only Star Trek movie I nearly walked out of. It was that bad.

Still, it did inspire a silly "Captain Kirk is Climbing a Mountain" video, which Star Trek Continues spoofed. I guess that's a plus.

At least ST V had a bit of distracting wackiness. ST IV just had light unfunny banter that was supposed to be funny.

Of course. Everyone else agrees with you. I'm the odd man out. It's all painfully forced to me. And the opportunity for a good Trek science fiction film was wasted in favor of light entertainment.
That's what happens on this forum. I happen to be part of the minority on this site who have that view of the nuTrek movies.

We've all got our preferences.

What view of the nu trek movies is in a minority, more than the others? I've heard lots of things about these movies, none of which happened to be in any majority.

Getting into that here would derail this thread. If you really want to know my opinions of nuTrek, feel free to send a PM.

Or maybe you could post them on a thread more suited for them or if none exist then start one with them, so that next time someone asks you that question you could refer them to that thread.

Or you could search the Kelvin Forum. Or you could review her posts through her profile. Or you could stop spamming up the place and do what she asked.
