Chancellor Zereen Kelrec discussion thread

He's an alright character. Amazing at playing the flute. The only thing that bothers me is that he's addressed as commander while wearing captain's insignia. A simple costume or script error, I know. But still. Other than that: he's alright.

I don't know if the guy is being written very well or not the way they want because I have way more sympathy for this guy than I think was intended. I was expecting the head of the War College to be someone more like Kreese from Cobra Kai or a "Ra Ra Ra" warrior (armchair general or not). Instead, the guy is clearly 99% a bunch of nerves and almost cracking under the pressure of everything. He has strong season one Boimler energy and really I think Chancellor Ake is treating him really poorly. She doesn't seem to find her good natured pranks really hurt this guy.

Also, who doesn't love tea?

What do you think of him and the actor's performance?
I love how he is introduced as this militaristic, scary looking antagonist.

And he's just such a dork.
It's great.

I still think the idea of the "war college" is stupid though & they should have just been a different division (Maco/security school vs. command school vs science school vs engineering school or something)

There is a line in, I think 1x04, to paraphrase, that the War College is JUST a college and not part of the military, but simultaneously implies that Starfleet Academy IS considered part of the "military" itself.

I mean they're in the same building so are they separate branches, competing organizations, or just rival fraternities.

The curious thing is they're not in the same building, they just seem to share some of the same facilities - the Academy accomodation is on Athena, and Kelrec's Office and the WC Barracks are actually in San Francisco. We don't see WC Cadets in Academy Classes, but we've seen them using the PT rooms and apparently other facilities on the Athena.

As it should be.

But rivalries are common even in organizations.

Well, I didn't want to get into until 1st season is over, but hello there.

Chancellor Kelrec is my fave in the show, just like Major Hayes 2.0. Unsure / insecure? It's literally his job to do, constantly doubt if everything is okay. He's responsible for a big farm of young jerks, while they're setting another one facility in the neighborhood. Dork & closed? I'd say, he has seen some shit, so he has no intention to open hugs to everybody (but he actually does when Darem said he needs it). He's patient to Ake's oddity while she cannot accept even his harmless tea passion. He trusts Starfleet colleagues, young and adult, while they goof him (until Ake really crosses the borders, then he bites back). A noble one, I'm in love.

Also thank you for asking about the actor. Raoul Bhaneja is a longtime Trekkie, as well as a charming singer (you may check Raoul and The Big Time. He's also masterfully playing harmonica, so the poor flute performance is a sort of easter egg :)). I'm excited how he's made Kelrec consistent and clearly readable from the very first appearance onscreen in the ep.2. Later I reached Raoul's interview to ScreenRant - yep, he knows what he's doing with his character, and he knows what his character is doing here.

I really like Kelrec and have had a soft spot for him since the start of the series. I feel he really came into his own in episode 6. Kelrec went from being somewhat nebbish to very commanding and competent and didn't appear to be intimidated by Nus Braka at all. I think Kelrec is definitely someone you want at your side in a crisis. I really hope he gets a moment to shine in the finale.

I absolutely appreciate the moment in the Vitus Reflux, when the mess in War College bedrooms begin. A few minutes later Kelrec is here, full-dressed, aware of WTF, and which paragraph of the regulations (one-point estimate) they could break :)

To be fair, he's only JUST doing up his tunic when he walks up.

Still good enough ;)
I also think heating up an entire lagoon just because it seems a good idea is more Starfleet-vibe than, say, putting your feet up on the armrest

I'm still trying to work out how he's 70. I don't think I'll look as youthful when I hit 40.
1. Raoul himself is 51, so you have all the chances look as youthful in your 40
2. Shouldn't Humans in the 32 century be healthier, live longer and look younger due to achievements of medicine? Or I'm on a dangerous path of ableism?

Yeah, 32nd century living it shouldn't be that hard to look relatively youthful at seventy years old. Hell, if anything it could help suggest the epilogue in the Disco finale is even further in the future than people were speculating.

Do we technically know if he is Human yet, or fully Human. We can assume he wasn't born on Earth, though.
