Chancellor Zereen Kelrec discussion thread

I don't know if the guy is being written very well or not the way they want because I have way more sympathy for this guy than I think was intended. I was expecting the head of the War College to be someone more like Kreese from Cobra Kai or a "Ra Ra Ra" warrior (armchair general or not). Instead, the guy is clearly 99% a bunch of nerves and almost cracking under the pressure of everything. He has strong season one Boimler energy and really I think Chancellor Ake is treating him really poorly. She doesn't seem to find her good natured pranks really hurt this guy.

Also, who doesn't love tea?

What do you think of him and the actor's performance?

Do we know where Kelrec is from? Zereen is apparently a common Persian/Iranian name, commonly female though.

For the most part, he seems perfectly okay. (And a lot more okay than some of his students.) But it’s true — it’s almost counterintuitive that he’s running the War College and Lura Thok is at the Academy, rather than the reverse.

Now if they had an Intelligence College, he’d fit perfectly.

I liked how he called Ake out for abandoning the Federation 15 years ago. I wish Ake would have actually addressed it though, giving some more character development to her. That was probably the only scene of that storyline I did like. I also like that he is a little unsure of himself.

I think Ake has genuine respect and love for Kelrec but I don't think he has have much for himself. He seems very isolated and lonely and his job seems to be what gives him meaning (which i think is telegraphed in how upset he is at Ake for abandoning Starfleet). I think Ake picks up on this and pushes his buttons playfully to get him to open up and maybe relax a little. Ake absolutely adores this guy and only wants the best for him but his insecurities have gotten in the way. Ake giving Kelrec permission to let himself be bad at something (playing the flute) seemed to pull the stick out of his ass.

Kelrec is the type of guy that makes one say 'Yeah he's a weirdo who may like tea a little too much, but he's our weirdo and we love him for who he is'.

Sooo...like most men I work with who have been told "pull yourself up by your own bootstraps" all their lives and can't actually express or accept compliments towards themselves.

If that was the intention, it would be a funny way to stay on-point with Trek's previous race-blind change-ups and/or evolved butcherings of human names!

if there was a episode of starfleet academy like the 1985 film the breakfast club he would be like the high school vice principal and put the students both from war collage and starfleet academy in one room for detetion

That would be a decent episode of this show.

Mind you, I've starving for nuance from the War College.

I don't think that's the plot of FBDO.

I mean it is but it would involve Caleb pretending to be sick, stealing Karem's family shuttlecraft or space yacht, and then them accidentally totaling the space shuttle. Kelrec is spending the entire time trying to prove Caleb is out of bounds to get him expelled, only for him to get horribly injured by a Targ or Nausicaan. Karem then gets the courage to confront his parents and become a better man.

We could also get Alan Ruck to play a time traveling Admiral Hariman for no reason other than to make the plot origin obvious.

*beat*

Call me, Paramount!

"Karem's ass is so tight, that if you shoved a lump of coal up his ass, in two weeks you'd have a dilithium crystal"

The guy is one of the show's punching bag. The other one is that nerdy guy with dark glasses and curly hair. He seems to be the stand in for for old trek fans who complain about nutrek.
