Spoilers Centenary Special trailer

Well, that is certainly a thing. I'm glad to see Ace again, although I'm very glad that I already don't care for Big Finish or I'd be more pissed off at Chibnall then I already am. Tegan I really wish I didn't have to see again, but whatever. The special will be terrible like all of Chibnall's stuff, but I'll watch for Ace and to cheer as the 13th Doctor, and Chibnall's era, dies.

I wish you luck. :p

Alternate universes. I'm fine with Big Finish existing separately from the series.
I don't. Never did.

Contradicting Big Finish shouldn't be a reason to not be excited about this episode.
Well, what else is there to talk about? I already know its gonna be a weak episode with bad dialogue, incoherent plotting and unsatisfactory characterization.

...and it's just plain silly to get mad at Chibnall for that.
But when you don't enjoy an era in the slightest, and are spent after five years of vapid, emotionless, half-assed drivel, surely the smaller points become the finer points? I absolutely would not bitch and moan if this was the Moffat era, for example.

As I said in the other thread, the trailer was interesting - more so than the episode.

I'm not keen Tegan (who I didn't recognise at first) but it'll be good to see Ace again. If we could get another Doctor in (McGann please !) that would be great.

What's the issue with Ace's appearance contradicting Big Finish / Childhoods End ?

I forgot it was even on this weekend. Tbh Dorotheé and Tegan ‘Oh Rabbits’ Jovanka are enough to make me watch, but I hope he doesn’t fuck them up.

That's like being consistently surprised when Uwe Bull makes a terrible movie. At some point, you just know he's not good at it.

I think people are overestimating how much Big Finish this actually contradicts. The only Ace story that takes place after she leaves the Doctor is Dark Universe, and the only Tegan story is The Gathering, which was already contradicted by “Death of the Doctor” and the “Farewell, Sarah Jane” webcast.

Gotta love Doctor Who fans who can respond to a bit of fan-service by saying “this would make me hate this bit of Doctor Who even more if I didn’t already hate this other bit of Doctor Who anyway.”

I, too, love Doctor Who fans who absolutely ignore those other Doctor Who fans who explain succinctly and understandably why they hang up on minutia such as continuity talk (which is pointless in DW discourse) and, especially, ignore the larger existing argument that the show doesn't really have anything else going for it beyond these cheap parlour tricks. I'm thrilled Ace and Tegan are back - how could I not be? But when Moffat would have left it ambivalent as to how long its been since they last saw the Doctor, Chibnall sheer disregard fits the bill of a person who looks at the show and character in a way that I don't agree fundamentally. And its bad enough already that you use those two legends as second fodder in Jodie's exit episode.

Reckon they’ll kill off Ace? Again? Again again? Again again again? I mean everyone knows she should be living in 18th Century Russia anyway. Or 19th. I forget.

I've reached the point where it's hard to get excited about fan service. The most exciting thing in the trailer for me was actually Ashad. He was the most interesting villain of the past three seasons and was completely wasted in the end. If they can do something cool with him this time I'll be impressed.

Moffat’s use of the Brigadier contradicted any number of tie-ins, but sure, he would totally have cared about maintaining the integrity of two specific Big Finish audios.
Moffat had a good run and an earned goodwill about him. It's surely not an unreasonable thing to do to compare the output of the showrunners and judge their work accordingly.

I mean, whatever. Some fans think the show is not in dire need of a revamp, so its pointless to argue with them.

The fact she says she hasn't seen The Doctor in 30 years. Likewise Tegan and 40 years.
Fans of the spin-off media had to confront the same issue with Sarah Jane in 2007 with "School Reunion," which pretty clearly indicated that she hadn't seen the Doctor between "The Hand of Fear" and then, even though she had adventures with the seventh and eighth Doctors in the novels (notably Interference and Bullet Time) and the comics (notably "Train-Flight"). Everything old is new again.

I'm curious which Doctor is was Tegan last saw forty years ago -- the fifth in "Resurrection" or the sixth in "In a Fix."

I don't think anyone cares about maintaining continuity with "Minuet in Hell." I'd certainly hope not, anyway. :)

I wasn’t even thinking of “Minuet in Hell,” but if we’re going to go down that road I doubt anyone would be heartbroken if “Dark Universe” unhappened. It’s not like there’s a shortage of stories where Ace calls the Doctor a bastard and the Eleven does some one-note raving.

But they are time travellers, so maybe the Doctor dropped off an older Ace back on Earth in the 1980’s after the Big Finish adventures? She could be older than she looks? Or this could be an Ace who has not yet become a ‘Time Lady’… this could be a continuation of the Big finish audios and New Adventure novels leading in to a finale for the character that has already been written in the audio plays or books?

I’m sure that it will all fit together in some convoluted way!

Yup, which is why I have no issues here.

That one is best forgotten!

You get no argument from me. Just pointing out why some people are already inexplicably angry on this particular point.

You heard it here first! The centenary special is the long awaited sequel to Death Comes to Time! :guffaw:

Just to be clear -- and I hope the smiley does that -- I am entirely kidding. DCcT doesn't fit with anything. It doesn't even fit with Doctor Who! I sort of admire it for that reason.

Question is will we get any allusions about Hex (or Benny, but less likely due to River) from Ace?

If Moffatt can namedrop Eight's companions in Night of the Doctor we can get some audio love here too!
