CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

I wish Discovery had gone for this retro pre-Original Series look. Klingon ships that look like Klingon ships. There's the visual connection to the universe I knew and loved right there in whatever version of the Axanar trailer I happen to come across. Detail running deep into the production design, and which are much more than easter eggs. :(
You mean all the ships (aside from the Ares) borrowed from ENT and 2009 Star Trek??

I seem to recall a time when they were the unTrek abomination:lol:

Yeah, it definitely proves that the aesthetics work in the modern day, and that compromises can be made that retain authenticity.

For whatever anyone can say about Axanar.... the Ares was one gorgeous ship.
No, it really doesn't because at it's PEAK the Axanar campaign had 14000 backers. In terms of global Star Trek fandom and marketing - that's nothing. It's a couple showings in a movie theater on one day. Whether that would appeal to the general audience at large (which either a TV series or film HAS to do to be successful) is very debatable.

(And I say that as a TOS fan who has zero problem with said aesthetic - BUT I also realize when you're spending the amount CBS/Paramount has to to make a TV series or feature film, just doing something that appeals to the hard core fan base isn't going to net them a profit on the endeavor.)

I wasn't talking about how many people saw it or backed it; It was a personal opinion, that the ships and aesthetics look as modern and sleek as anything from the modern day, and would be accepted fully if used for a modern production.

And my response was my personal opinion and why I felt that way - welcome to a discussion board.

Just because CBS/Paramount hasn't delivered an authentic retro aesthetic doesn't mean the public would reject it.

God knows there was enough pushback on the look of the Kelvinverse and Discovery ships, though, so it's not like the new stuff has a stellar track-record.

If anything Discovery suffers from trying too hard to conform to modern fashion trends. It feels...forced.

If they bothered to send me the stuff that was promised for my donation (USS Ares patch, Prelude Blu-ray, etc.), AND if they appeared to be making a good faith effort to actually create the movie we were backing in the first place, then maybe I would consider additional support.

Since neither of those things are likely to happen based on the current known facts, then no. Not in a million fucking years.

This just popped up on a Facebook feed.

Axanar ships now available from Studio Bergstrom!

I have finally made an agreement with Alec to sell my Axanar ships in my Studio Bergstrom Catalog. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to help keep this fan production going.

Wait -- can they do that? The ship is clearly modeled as a Star Trek ship and in a short made as a Star Trek film. Can he profit off this?

Likely not. Won't stop him from trying, it would appear. These people really just don't get it.

It's over, guys. Go home and do something else - productive this time, maybe.

I checked the web site advertised in that feed. There are eight cast-metal ships. Here's the "Ares" description:

1:3125 scale Ares Battle-Cruiser is cast in no-lead pewter in 4 parts; ~3-1/16"L x 1-3/4"W x 3/4"H (78mmL x 44.5mmW x 19mmH) unpainted, and 1” hex plastic flight stand is not included.

I must note that this 'just happens to be" the same scale as the newer Star Fleet Battles miniatures. Based on the photos, the quality and detail appears to be on-par with the ones Mongoose Publishing was making, but the price is a tad higher ($12.50 vs. $9.95).

EDIT: The post was REMOVED from the Facebook group page by the admins. :)

This pretty much epitomizes the remaining attempts to profit-take from Axanar.
