So it will take a little time to see, but perhaps the initiative of a studio licensing a committed and straight arrow fan group to do semipro vignettes will catch on with other fandoms/IP holders.

It certainly is a way of injecting some control by taking oxygen out of the room for "pro am" business startups. Fans should go to the "official" semipro operation, not some knockoff. The business slot is occupied now by a licensee.

It will also probably give the studios a lot of say in which actors/professionals do what with fans.

This may be an arrangement that lots of IP holders would want. Having official licensees in a new ecosystem probably strengthens IP rights there. It creates a beachhead around pro-am "fair use" which is defined by the IP holder rather than storm-the-gates attorneys for Axanars.

Anyone heading to Lawrenceville GA for the Ares/Valkyrie/Industry/Rocketworx/OWC Studios Volunteer Weekend on August 26/27? I hear Alec himself might make an appearance!

Honestly, I hope the volunteers seek out and speak to former volunteers outside the few who may remain with the project.

The decision to participate further with Axanar isn't so much about David v Goliath or about defending the 'true' fans.

For anyone who wants to use their time well, its IMO about a manager who laid claim to many hundreds of thousands of donations into an attempt to build himself a professional studio. Who argues in court that key parts of Trek like Vulcans are not intellectual property because if you chop Vulcans into small enough pieces, even devils have pointed ears. Who in the face of accidental support from Lin and Abrams, blew that off and countersued. Who keeps changing his business incorporation. Who drove away large numbers of prior volunteers.

It may be more than they really want to be involved in.

Did this seriously require a second much longer blog entry?
This is what I tried to say before. Lane did great (or used to) just simply reporting on what's new in fan films, with a little Q&A.
Honesty who cares about reading a book on the life and times of Nikky Synder? People are out there busting their bum to create the next fan film, that's when I used to enjoy reading Lane's blog.

The man has a serious hard on for Alec Peters. I'm not sure how long FFF has been around but it seems to me that he has about a 5:1 ratio of Axanar posts to other fan films. At least as long as I've been paying attention. It's hard to take that as a blog that is anything less than a mouthpiece for Axanar.

Mike Bawden (the AXANAR PR person) helped get the Fan Film Factor Blog off the ground - so yeah I guess Johnathan Lane feels indebted to AXANAR for that. (Doesn't make him anything less of a disgusting Alec Peters/Axanar sycophant IMO.)
