Anything that makes the surfaces less reflective is better than nothing, but there are better solutions than egg cartons, obviously.

Room treatment and sound proofing are incredibly complex issues. Solve one problem and you risk creating another. My recording space has evolved into a Frankenstein mish-mash of stuff and I sitll need to use extremely sophisticated software to get my audio tracks to an acceptable level. At some point, I probably should just throw in the towel and bring in a consultant to start from scratch.
