If I remember a podcast right, AP's explanation for using the Kelvin timeline ships was that he believed they would've existed before the timeline had been altered when Nero came back or something like that. I've always felt that those ships didn't tie into TOS enough. The Ares should've had a TOS style deflector, but AP got talked out of hat by Tobias for lighting reasons on the model. There is a line in Prelude where AP refers to the Xenophon, an old Marlin-class destroyer, and I do believe that comes from FASA.

The concept of the whole "Four Years War" comes from the FASA Star Trek RPG supplements. As FASA lost the license in 1987 because they released an unlicensed TNG Sourcebook using some characters and concepts they had heard about during TNG's early development - but which had CHANGED by the time the Supplement was released - which was BEFORE TNG's pilot had even aired.

(Plus there was also the fact that FASA didn't have a explicit license to do anything TNG related per se; but they figured everything 'Star Trek' was covered in the original agreement; but Paramount at the time didn't see it that way and both sides went to court. FASA 'lost' - IE the court decided the contract was specific enough in what it mentioned that the new TNG material wasn't included - and after all that when time came to renew the agreement, Paramount declined to do so.)

A sad day for gaming - remember it well. I've played all the Trek systems as well as SFB (not including Modiphius' latest incarnation) and FASA, by far, was my favorite - particularly with John M. Ford's contributions for the Klingons taken from his books "The Final Reflection" and "How Much for Just The Planet?". He presented a far more richly thought-out culture for them than the herds of Samurai-Viking Hair Band rockers constantly bellowing about HONOOORRRR!!!! that we got in TNG+ (IMO, of course). When I got deep into White Wolf games, I retrofitted their character sheets to Trek because I really didn't like what was done by Last Unicorn (1998-2000) and Decipher (2001-2003). Also did versions for Battlestar Galactica and Immortals (based on Highlander lore) in the absence of anything official from those genres. Worked pretty well. Haven't tried the newest Modiphius version (2016-present), but I'm not really into it anymore these days, sadly.

Sigh. I had so many of the FASA Star Trek role playing game books. Not a great system, but, I loved the work and imagination that went into the whole thing.
FASA built up a rich and detailed Star Trek backstory which I loved exploring even though I never had interest in the game itself.

FWIW, Discovery even referenced them last season: The co-ordinates Spock kept repeating backward for Talos IV were from their The Federation sourcebook.

The Season 1 DSC writers (and cast) kept saying they looked at 'The Final Reflection' for inspiration with the Klingons as well, but I've never read the book so I don't know how much that actually made it into the show, other than referencing 'The Black Fleet' in dialogue.

Trek with the White Wolf system, that's a trip down memory lane for me as well. We had a local group that did that as well in the late 90ies, who for three or four years were offering more and more complex multi group events at the local gaming convention. Good times!

The amount of people deluded enough to keep this trainwreck going never ceases to amaze me
